The Pakistani People Strike Down Musharraf
The results of the national elections held in Pakistan has dealt a tremendous blow to Pervez Musharraf. His party, Pakistan Muslim League-Q has lost most of its members, and although the results have yet to be finalized, it looks dim for Musharraf. The big winners of course is the party of slain and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, The Pakistan Peoples Party. The Party led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Muslim League-N also won big.
There is a choice now for the two big winners in the elections. They can either form a shared coalition with Musharraf and his party or choose to form an opposition coalition which would threaten the political survival of Musharraf. A power sharing deal favors Pervez Musharraf.
In the even that the opposition does decide to form a coalition against Musharraf, they may decide to impeach.
Senator Biden and Senator John Kerry was in Pakistan during the elections, and despite the warnings that the elections could turn out rigged and violent, the result was far from. I guess, when the lead of the opposition is that high, it’s kind of hard to cheat. (never deterred our very own politicians here right?)
But in all aspect, The Musharraf regime seems to be coming to an end. The United States has been throwing out the idea that they are not supporting Musharraf alone, but they are supporting Pakistan, and that they are willing to work with anyone who is in power. That in my opinion is the strongest evidence that Musharraf is on the way out.
With almost 110 seats for Bhutto’s party, 100 seats for Sharif’s party, and the rest going to Musharraf’s party, it’s time to reign in on Musharraf’s parade. The next obstacle of course is The Taliban and Al Qaeda. With a lingering doubt of the capacity of either opposition parties to have the political willpower to do stand up to these groups within the borders of their country and Afghanistan.
