Save The Planet: Don’t Eat Meat, Stop Farting
A story coming from Reuters got me laughing a little. According to the article, Eating less meat and dairy could help tackle climate change by reducing the amount of methane gas emitted by cows and sheep, a British government agency says.
Cattle and sheep release millions of metric tons of methane gas a year into the environment through flatulence. In New Zealand, for example the 55 million farm animals produce some 90 percent of the country’s methane emissions.
I’ve never actually heard the word flatulence used before, most people just say fart. But hey, to each his own. But to suggest that we eat less meat so that we can help stop climate change sounds maybe a bit ridiculous. Considering there are more pressing ways that governments can substantially do this. Of course the biggest emitters of gaseous matter that contribute to climate change will probably act on this fart matter, rather than actually acting on more substantive ways of reducing their carbon output. ehem USA and China…
I’ve also read that according to a United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization report, cattle emit 18 percent of greenhouse gases, more than all the transportation combined. I can’t verify this claim. But it does make you think of maybe not eating so much meat. I myself don’t eat that much meat, considering all the hormones given to these animals nowadays just so they can grow faster and bigger. I for one, don’t need any more hormones, do you?
So, while, there are much better ways that governments should be tackling climate change, eating less meat almost seems too easy.. And oh yeah, maybe we shouldn’t fart either… just kidding, let it out, you know you want to!
