Aside from the fact that it’s election season, there’s even more at stake this time around because of the fact that the current administration, if it wins a majority, will again push for a Charter Change.
But, the headlines as of late have been about the Melo Commission report. So let’s go around the nation as well as the blogosphere, and see what the sentiments are.
- Esperon: It’s Alston who is in denial It seems the military is being attacked from all sides these days, so Esperon has decided to fight back. As I have said, and I will repeat it here, it’s sad that Esperon has to go on the attack. It’s as if he expects Kofi Annan himself to show up on our doorstep to do the investigating, thus legitimizing the role of the UN in this investigation. Esperon, knows full well that Alston is credible, but trying to shift blame and the spotlight is the only recourse Esperon and other military official has at this point.
- Ellen writes about Esperon as well, regarding his offensive on both the MELO commission report and Alston.
- The Manila Bulletin writes about the report as well, but is really not worth reading, just regurgitation of facts.
- Jove says that it was a painful read.
- The Daily Tribune acknowledges the intense pressure that has been on Gloria and the AFP over the report.
- Bayan Muna calls for the resignation of Esperon and Gonzales
- Inquirer’s Editorial rightly observes the silence of Arroyo and Ramos during the wreath laying to kick off the EDSA anniversary. “It took foreign concern over human rights violations for Marcos to even make token attempts to rein in his death squads. We see the same give-and-take today. Is it any wonder then that these and many other similarities to what came before have embarrassed our government into silence when confronted by the achievements of 1986?”
