Call Center Operators At Risk For Deadly DVT

The Philippine Call Center Industry has seen a boom. In fact, many college graduates gravitate towards this job opportunity because of flexible schedule (although many are at night) and better pay as compared to many entry level jobs out there.

So, I thought I would bring up this medical condition, which I feel may be of significance to many Filipino Operators. It’s related to the fact that as an operator, you may have to sit in your chair for very long periods of time.

The medical condition is known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (also known as deep-venous thrombosis) or DVT. When sitting in a confined space for a long period of time, there is an increased chance of a blood clot forming. The problem is not the clot itself, but that the clot can travel through your blood system and become lodged in your lungs or your heart, and cause a Pulmonary Embolism(PE) thus leading to death.

But, what was once confined to limited mobility due to illness as well as other circumstances such as travel, has now moved into the realm of technology and computers. In fact, many experts have coined this as “e-thrombosis.”

A lot of us, especially those, who are at the computers all day long are very much at risk. Who are at most risk here in The Philippines? The call center operators, because of there long hours sitting and taking calls. I’ve already informed a whole bunch of my friends via email, and I thought I would do the same here for our readers.

This is serious folks. It is recorded that more people in the U.S. die from DVT than from breast cancer and aids combined. I don’t know the statistics here in the Philippines, but I’m guessing as we move more and more into technology fields, this could definitely be a problem.

How to avoid this? Some helpful tips include taking breaks, moving around, and keeping hydrated (dehydration can promote clots).

I hope everyone heeds this advice, and please forward this to any of your friends who have call center jobs. To expand this further, anyone who sits for a very long period of time must take cautionary measures as well (e.g. sitting at desk, computer, or the television for a long period)

  1. […] In a previous article, I stated that the Philippine Call Center Industry was booming, and in a recent article by IHT, this is indeed being confirmed. I honestly think that of all asian countries, we still have the best command of the english language. We pronounce english so much better than other countries (I think I’m being bias here). The call center business is the fastest growing industry in the country, growing last year by 90 percent as revenue reached $1.7 billion. More than 100 centers around the country have created a new class of relatively affluent and independent young Filipinos. […]
