Malu Fernandez, Manila Standard Today, Bigotry In The Media

With the recent irresponsible, elitist, bigoted, and discriminating comments made by Manila Standard Today columnist Malu Fernandez in her People Asia magazine article “From Boracay to Greece” in which she makes many belittling comments about Overseas Filipino Workers and Filipinos in general, the response from Filipino bloggers have been overwhelming, and have not been light on the criticism. When do we say enough is enough and that we will no longer stand for the bigotry and discrimination that takes place, not only in this country but all around the world?

For her part, in her “apology”, Malu Fernandez addressed the emails responding to her article. However, the apology, was nothing more than another attempt to take a jab at Filipinos and to once again assert that she’s an elite that those in lower socioeconomic classes just fail to understand or comprehend her “wit”.

Key Statements In Malu Fernandez’s People Asia Article

However I forgot that the hub was in Dubai and the majority of the OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) were stationed there. The duty-free shop was overrun with Filipino workers selling cell phones and perfume. Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them.

While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs), my only consolation was the entertainment on the small flat screen in front of me. But it was busted, so I heaved a sigh, popped my sleeping pills and dozed off to the sounds of gum chewing and endless yelling of “HOY! Kumusta ka na? At taga sann ka? Domestic helper ka rin ba?” Translation: “Hey there? Where are you from? Are you a domestic helper as well?” I though I had died and God had sent me to my very own private hell.

On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while Jo Malone evaporated into thin air.

All in all, it’s been a pretty good summer. Jetting from the Aegean Sea to the Pacific may sound a bit pretentious until you wake up in economy class smelling like air freshener.

Response By Malu Fernandez

Understandably, The Manila Standard Today, received a few emails of complaint, so Malu Fernandez decided to respond.

As I type this, I’d like you to know that it’s not about whining, complaining and bitching but just stating the facts. Just recently, I wrote a funny article in my magazine column and my friends thought it was hilarious. It was humorous and quite tongue-in-cheek, or at least I thought so, until the magazine got a few e-mails from people who didn’t get the meaning of my acerbic wit. The bottom line was just that I had offended the reader’s socioeconomic background. If any of these people actually read anything thicker then a magazine they would find it very funny. Most people don’t get the fact that they need bitches like me to shake up their world, otherwise their lives would be boring and mediocre. I obviously write for the a certain target audience and if what I write offends you, just stop reading.

Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other. Although I could mention that it is easier to understand someone who has a lower socioeconomic background that would entail a whole other page and frankly I don’t want to be someone to bridge the gap between socioeconomic classes. I leave that to the politicians in my family who believe they can actually help. Now I seriously ask you, am I being a diva or are people around me just lacking in common sense? Perhaps it’s a little of both!

Response To The Response

First of all, there is nothing funny about bigotry, and tongue-in-cheek does not have to entail irresponsible and insensitive statements such as the statements made in her article.

Second, she mentions a few emails, but only mentions the offense of one reader’s socioeconomic background. Notice that reader’s is singular (is this an editing mistake, are there actual editors who edit this crap?). Or maybe, Malu meant that all the emails were complaints of readers having their socioeconomic background offended. But either way, the fact that Malu tries to deflect the actual complaint and goes on another rant in which she again lambastes lower social classes, making another strong statement that indeed she is an elite herself, is further proof of her worth as displayed by her perceived higher class status. In her illogical rant, she implicitly says that the poor have lost their reason to understand her discriminatory comments.

Let me make it clear, the offense is not based on a socioeconomic issue, the offense is based on her statements of bigotry, discrimination, and intolerance against her own countrymen. Politicians, I mean noteworthy and honorable politicians, certainly do believe that they can make a difference. Just because she feels that she can’t make a difference, doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause. The fact that people are actually trying is much more noble, than playing aristocrat and hinting that The Philippines is a lost cause. Yes, I do believe, we can make a difference. And this means, calling out horrible individuals like Malu Fernandez.

I wonder if these acerbic statements will be too harsh for Malu’s diva reality?

  6. Oh my! I thought at first she was just trying to exercise her freedom of expression, but it seems she confuses bigotry with humor. God, writing a lifestyle column is not all about “Oh, I’m so rich and high-almighty; Betcha you wallow in the mud while I sample these heavenly gourmet.” Blech!

  7. Oh my gosh…she was worried about losing all those accessories…why??? does she really need to work super duper hard to look the way she does??? tsk tsk…

maybe somebody needs to publish an article on what some OFW feel when they are seated beside someone like this person…and being stuck with her on a flight for nine hours. that would be a pretty funny article to read. just imagine all the wit and sarcasm one could put. so many metaphores, character references to mention…

    hmmm…not a bad idea.

  8. This really gives Lifestyle writers a bad rap. I started off as a Lifestyle reporter and never in my wildest dreams would I ever say something as condescending as this. Nor would my editor or publisher tolerate it. First of all, Pilipino tayong lahat. Bakit ka mang-aapi ng kapwa mo? Secondly, you don’t have to flaunt your wealth to the world if you truly have it. Real wealth is not loud. Thirdly, your writing speaks so loudly of who you are, your values and what your heart is like, so one wonders about Malu F. Although newspaper columnists espouse individual opinions that are not reflective of the paper’s management, I think management needs to call the attention of their columnists when they write something that is in bad taste. Lastly, the response is clearly not an apology at all. It only even made her case way worse.

  14. yes, thats a very acerbic response just like her soul is. ive got friends who are really rich and true people but not a racist like her. this woman of plus size doesnt know the meaning being sensitive. she is a filipino and even if she had a chance to jet around the world…she’s not that rich as she claims since she still pinch money on economy. its a good thing that she was mistakenly though for a domestic helper…then it means all those branded beauty supplies doesnt work for her…since with all the wealth she got…she could not change her looks..maybe her housemaids look a lot better than her….therefore, she take chances on being a racist because she could never falunt her looks….what a pity of a human being! someday, the wheel has to turn around..maybe her family of politicians…are just as greedy and corrupted like her. thats why if the philippine government is composed of people like her family..no wonder..there will be a lot more ofw’s in different part of the world that she will be suffocated to deal with.

  25. Iba naman ng take ko sa writing nya. Maybe I expected it coming from her background. I would be infuriated more if it came from a foreigner but with Malu..my feeling is that I” Pitied her” rather than hated her.

She is so “high class” or maybe she has so much “inferiority complex” she has to flaunt her being in such level of high society and even taking a pick at people around her who earn honest and decent wages(OFWs).

Syempre, di naman natin basta pabayaan na laitin ng mga kapwa natin Pinoy ng isa ding kapwa Pinoy. But from her response I dont think she will get down from her throne and apologize. That is how she is and I think we should pity her more than crucify her. Maybe she thinks before sya lang ng nakakapagbyahe kasi mayaman nga siya pero ngayon everybody can travel…so bakit siya nag economy class?

  26. she’s no diva, she’s a b*tch!!! divas think about their actions, b*tches don’t! I’ll write about her in my blog, thanks for Shari for pointing Tingog.com out.

  27. Pwede po bang magmura?

Kasi iyon lang ang nababagay na mensahe na dapat ipa-abot sa taong ganyan (tao po ba yun? mukhang pig eh)

  28. I’D LOVE TO BE ON THE SAME PLANE WITH HER. I’LL SHOW HER WHAT A LITTLE PRIVATE HELL REALLY MEANS.

  29. a) I can’t call this wit. Wit requires at least some trickle of intellect and open-mindedness.

    b) It’s pitiful that publications actually allow this type of writing.

  30. how can malou be so idiotic?can’t she distinguish what she’s talking about? maybe her small brain is already in her big tummy.that’s the wit i have for her..know what?it’s a waste of time minding her.we absolutely know what OFW’s are and i am proud to be one.

  31. I think somebody should show her article/s to a shrink.

  33. Ooops! sorry! what I mean by original article is that I can’t read the pic file.

  34. It’s soo funny. i just read an article where she mentions how much she likeshow Jo Malone creates HIS scents. Hello… Jo Malone is a SHE!!!!! I’ve had her goods for like 5 years… how sosyal are you not to even know that Jo is a she?????? How jahe…

  35. I think regarding her claims that it’s her acerbic wits, let’s give her some benefit of the doubt? But I agree that we should pity this kind of character, firstly she knows no character dahil “pig” sya eh! And again let’s not mind this kind of people and don’t give her enough attention because we are only helping her to make a name, I honestly don’t know her and even though she has a rich breeding as so she claims, it’s true dahil mukha syang inahing baboy!!! Even though she wears those branded items and perfumes as she needs it badly for her to get noticed, it’s the goodness in one person which is easily noticed and and not the trademark.

  40. Malu, you are really something! You, and your “friends” find your article hilarious and funny? Then, that only shows that you indeed belong in a psych ward. You are a kind of person who loves to hurt other people for their enjoyment… gush… you need to see a psychiatrist… and fast. You think of yourself rich… nah… a good guess is that you are just an empty, hallow individual trying to surround yourself with “accessories inorder to be recognize.” But the reality is, you’re gonna end up lost and alone because nobody can stand your sharp, tactless, insensitve tongue.

  41. I was browsing through the 2006 POEA Statistics about OFW’s. I wanted to help this bitch and possibly her friends to avoid OFW’s. The list of countries where OFW’s are - is endless. She’d have to fly to the North or South Pole and even avoid all the airports in the Philippines. Da bitch is a moron who have no clue the connection between an OFW and the reason why she’s enjoying her fkn good life in the Philippines.

  42. she makes me laugh.
she just made an utter full out of herself. really.

  43. I know of a person who has been traveling half of her life & I bet this person has been to places this Malu has never even been too, yet she never dared call herself a JET SETTER. A TRUE jet setter knows that REGARDLESS of the airline, the nationalities, and the SOCIOECONOMIC background of the passengers, economy class IS CRAMPED, NOISY & UNCOMFORTABLE! And if I am TRULY rich, IMPROMPTU trip or not I would NEVER sacrifice COMFORT for a few thousands. Oh well, come to think of it, with those few thousands I’ve saved, I could already drown myself in a tub of Jo Malone to cover my stench.

It is indeed amazing to know that somebody is brave enough to let others know her true nature by writing such a ridiculous crap. She is poisoning her own blood. Who is she referring to as “Filipinos”?Isn’t she one? Poor her. I don’t give a damn if she was born with a golden spoon on her mouth, she still smells trash .I salute the OFW’s for their courage to live their family and work abroad.I hope she’ll realized that writing something for public reading must be given utmost care.

  45. the seats were so small for her coz she’s freaking huge! wtf?? lol

    lechonin na yan!

    KILL!

    KILL!

    KILL!

    haha lol..

  46. Ms. piggy is a lousy self centered and ignorant pork and beans who should really be in a “sardine can” and stay there until she knows how to live a life in a real world. We ofw’s do not need another bitch like her to shake our worlds, we have already enough of her family in politics doing a lot of funny circus and magics in the government so why bother. I believe MS should send back ms. porky to her “koral” and reeducate her or yet to La Loma to roast her.

By the way ms. porky we OFWs also do not use Havaianas in the beach, we use them in the house and in the bathroom for comfort, we normally walk in the beach barefooted with no regret scratching our pedicure, mura lang namang magpa-pedicure as compared to the thrill of playing barefooted in the white sand of boracay. Also, we do not bring 17kg of hand carry inside the plane kasi only 7 to 10 is allowed, lucky if you will be allowed to carry 15kg, hindi naman kami ignorante and a pain in the b__t just like what you are thinking.

And also for your information, so many OFWs have been in the places where you have already been just for holidays and not to work. Myself and my family have already toured as far as Rio in Brazil with my hard earned money being an OFW.

    Dear Sir/Ma’m,

It is important to let you know, life necessitates information. Information which is knowledge based. That is why books, newspapers, broadcast media, are all powerful. However Einstein claimed that, “imagination is better than knowledge.” I supposed you already perceived where I am leading to.

Could you please issues articles about the hardship, triumphs, and failures of our Filipino expats abroad, expats that includes domestic helpers and welders
to contradict what seems to be the standard today as promoted by the person mentioned in the title.

Please sir/ma’m proved her wrong. Maybe this is not an ideal society, but looking back at my History classes, it makes me proud to be Filipino.

One thing so good about the inconvenience she cause, most bloggers have shown what stuff they are made of–we may have used rude words and ungracious words about her writings, but at the end of the tunnel, the sense of being Filipino is there–intact.

  50. Malu Fernandez - why not look at yourself before you look on others…if you have the money why did you go for an economy flight and didn’t go for a business or first class…i think the answer is that your only pretending your “SOSI” but you are not…you are so proud of your gold sandals and your Louis Vuitton, but you forgot that those OFW’s can buy more Louis Vuitton (Original Ones) and more gold open sandals…They just don’t buy because they think first before they buy (Is it necessary for us to buy those kind of nonsense stuffs? Buying for a very expensive stuff just because of the Brand Name….)

But this MF is a nouveu riche and wants the whole world to know that she is “rich”, she has the “money”. But this does’nt mean she has to degrade us OFW’s!

Ano sabi nya as an excuse? Instead of making an apology? ” For the Select Readers” ba kamo? Meaning the elite group? How irresponsible one can get? As a journalist (ewan ko lang) she should know better.

Poor…pig! What’s her name? I don’t think even the rich people in Manila know her. She’s not even worthy to be called a Filipino or even a human being. at baka di mo alam, yang mga minamata mong OFW ang bumubuhay sa ating bansa ngayon.

  61. again.. same comment, MALU FERNANDEZ - she truly fits the word -> BITCH!

  62. isa siyang balyenang bagay lang sa burak!!! nakakaawa siya dahil ang kasihayan nya ay manglait lng ng kapwa pilipino. her accessories won’t make any difference about here personality, she still smell stinks when she fart. for malu, don’t do ever think of going back here in dubai, coz you will be beaten so hard by the so called “OFW”.

  63. …so that is you in the picture eh, now I understand why you have to accessorize yourself with lots of fashionable items. Correct me if I am wrong but I have read somewhere over the mass emails I received that your relatives are “politicians” and where do you think their money came from? If you analyze the situation my dear, the politicians work for the masses, thus they get the food they feed to their mouth from the pocket of a hard-earning and “lowly” OFW you are humbly mocking and degrading. Don’t you think that by this, you are also mocking our government who can’t provide enough opportunities for their people? Common sense? Why? Is there anything sensible about your article? It is not witty, there’s nothing to it and it’s just humiliating to all Filipinos because unfortunately you are one and you don’t deserve the life and blood our ancestors lost to fight for equality, justice and freedom. Shame on you!!! That leaves you to becoming a diva right? Nah, you’re just a desperate low trashing bi**ch who craves for attention. Well, madamoisselle, be carefully what you wish for because you just might get it. One more thing, it’s also better if you not just accessorize and spritz yourself with Joe Malone perfume because it won’t be able to cover up your stench but I think your time will be better spent in going to the gym or scheduling appointments for liposuction.

  64. We are not supposed to be upset. Everybody has a right to be who they are, and this person chose to be who she is - which is . . . . (I leave it unto you). We live for a different purposes and this person lives for us to have a complete definition of how to have a counter-attitude from hers. If Satan never existed then we will never know and will never have the word “ENEMY” or any opposing word to what is moral, noble and respectable.

She did say a lot of things which is true. First is that, we DO need B@#$%&* like her to shake our world. Have you seen her size lately? By the way, I almost thought that it is a bark of white tree that I’ve seen in one of her pictures but then I noticed the, somewhat, smiley face then it registered to my mind that it is a person (based on the picture over viewing the Aegean Sea).

I just suggest that if one the people, who left the above comments, saw her in person. Do not hate her nor criticize her. Just give this floor to her and try to understand her nature. It is obvious that this kind of individual had never experienced respect and emotions such as love.

We actually need to educate ourselves on how to distinguish the differences between her bottom and her façade. Because it is almost on the same size and appearance especially while she’s sitting.
I also expect her to be a wealthy person as well. I mean who could ever afford to buy a make-up and perfume that can accommodate the size of her skin and overcome the scent that emerges from her body?
If the kind of humor of what she has is the kind that she shares with her friends then we really know what humor is (Wowowee! is much better that hers).
Based on the book of Proverbs, “a foolish man displays his folly by running into trouble where a wise man overlooks an insult”. We should be wiser than her comments.
Instead, we should retaliate to the “Manila Standard Today”. In fact, after they had published the article they do not deserve the name.
Let it be HE to be in the center of our decisions, motives, actions and words to be spoken.

  65. Salute, roxy! Right on!

  66. This is a brand-sucking elitist who knows nothing but travels and to spend her clan’s wealth. Totally disgusting! The way she wrote only speaks of her being a high-class social climber. Nasa taas na gusto pang tumaas kaya nagmamagandang kesyo hindi kaya ang atmosphere sa economy class. And to those of “your kind” who agree that your just being funny, magsama-sama kayo sa impyerno.

Don’t blame the seats for being narrow. Nasa umuupo ‘yan, boba!

  67. kotsengkuba madaming ganyan. everyone you see on the society pages are like that.

even celine lopez. old rich as she is, she’s engaged to marcel crespo, anak ni jimenez. diba mj filed cases against his own son?

they’re all liars, frauds, tax cheats and scammers. kung sino pa ang rich sila ang nasa media.

i really don’t know how they can sleep at night.

  68. it’s good that all their elitist ways are being exposed online. it’s about time people speak up and share their baho to the public

  69. Her first article clearly shows that she has no class. She puts other people down to bring herself up. People who’ve been brought up properly will never do that.

Her second article shows that the only opinion that matters to her are of her and her friends. So long as they find her funny in her own “acerbic” way, then her world continues to spin. To her, all the hate mail is just validation of her existence, her newfound popularity is just empowering.

Let us stop giving this classless “diva” the attention that she does not deserve and move on with our respective “economy-class” lives.

  70. […] agree with everyone else: OFWs the world over deserve a public apology. Nick of Tingog.com has launched a campaign to get just that. Until then, Malu Fernandez better hope I don’t rin […]

  71. TO ASK THE PUBLISHER,MANILA STANDARD TO FIRE MALOU FOR THAT DEROGATORY ARTICLE AIMED AGAINST OFWs WILL ONLY FALL ON DEAF EARS…BELIEVE ME……MAIMPLUWENSYA SI MALOU AND FOR SURE, MALAKAS ANG KAPIT NYA…

    THIS MADNESS SPREAD LIKE WILDFIRE….
WHAT IF, WE THE OFWs, WILL RAISE SOME FUNDS, AND PUBLISH IN A NATIONAL NEWSPAPER OUR COLLECTIVE CONDEMNATION OF THIS SELF PROCLAIMED DIVA…ONE(1) DOLLAR FOR EVERY OFW…??..I CAN CONTRIBUTE FIVE DOLLARS MYSELF OR MORE….

IF WE CONTINUE THIS THREAD, JUST VOICING OUR DISGUST , WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING, THEN , MALOU WOULD STILL HAVE A GREAT TIME INSULTING US…
WE CAN MAKE THIS THREAD A HUNDRED KILOMETERS LONG IN CONDEMNING MALOU…AND READING THIS , MALOU IS JUST LAUGHING HER WAY OUT…

WITH MALOU’s FACE ON THE NEWSPAPER, TOGETHER WITH HER ARTICLE THAT DEGRADED THE OFW’s, ALL OF HER FRIENDS , HER FAMILY , WILL THEN BE ABLE TO SEE THE EFFECT OF HER ACTS….

REALLY, ASKING FOR HER RESIGNATION IS NOT ENOUGH…TO CONDEMN HER ACTS IN PUBLIC IS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR THIS LADY BECAUSE SHE DEGRADED US ALSO IN PUBLIC…SHE ATTACKED US IN HER ARTICLE , WE FIGHT BACK WITH A FULL PAGE CONDEMNATION THRU THEIR RIVAL NEWSPAPER…WHO KNOWS, THE ADVERTISERS FOR MANILA STANDARD WILL PULL OUT THEIR ADS AND CHANGE COURSE…

THIS WILL THEN BE A STAIN IN HER REPUTATION…IF SHE’S GOT ONE..

AND THIS WILL ALSO WARN SOME WRITERS NOT TO MESS WITH OFWS..NOT TO MAKE FUN WITH US…BECAUSE WE CAN COME IN FULL FORCE TO DEFEND OUR DIGNITY…

    ONE FOR ALL….ALL FOR ONE..!!!…

    JUST A SUGGESTION…

    MABUHAY ANG MGA OFW’S……

  72. oo nga tama ka dyan budoy.

di nyo ba napapansin jalos lahat ng lifestyle writers relatives ng pulitiko or anak ng mga businessmen na hindi nagbabayad ng tax? lahat yan mga yan may kapit kala mo kung sino. i agree. i’ll contribute din. dapat ilabas lahat ng mga baho ng mga balasubas at matapobre na mga hinayupak na yan. at least sa internet wala silang kapit. power of the people!

  73. Let’s google bomb her with the handle “bitch” or other explitives :)

  74. […] no statute of limitations on outrage. So after finally catching up on my RSS reader, I came across this little tidbit about an article published in People Asia by a certain Malu Fernandez, who also […]

  75. she sucks big time, i remember her back in college she was almost a friend and guess what ?, i am working abroad now. and another thing, i hate her dellusional self now more than ever. shes like a sogging bigot cheap shot who suffers from the groucho marx syndrome ” I refuse to belong to a club who would have me as a member”

  76. ” it’s funny daw ” sabi ni malu F… okay gigil na gigil nga ako sa iyo malu F… gusto kitang kurutin, at sana lahat kaming mga ofw ay makakurot sa iyo. tingnan ko lang pag di natangal ang taba mo.

  77. Some writer write to satirize or humour, but not this Ms Fernandez. And the worst thing she wrote was thanking God for not taking the first Ferry that sank and that was the most insensitive and hurtful things to say to the relatives of the victims of the Ferry that Sank and if I were one of the relatives, I’ll just gladly blow her Fat Ass so she can thank God personally on her Way to Hell…

Other than that, is there an Ombudsman within the Media entity to monitor the behaviour of its writers and staff if they cross the limit of Free Speech and thread that very sensitive line, we call here in Canada the “hate crime”? No it’s not the case of libel or slander which is a civil case, a tort, but under the Criminal code which states that any publication written or by words or on line that promotes hatred to a particular groups or race or religious group or ethnic race is a crime…Under the limitations to our rights…and to humiliate a race, even if it is your own is a crime… so my advice, the next time you re-visit your Charter, please tell your lawmakers to include a provision that will states something like this:

“The Philippines Charter of Rights and Freedoms Guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.”

And then enact a law specifically for Ms Fernandez to shut her trap..hehe..

  78. ohh yes it seems shes an elite, she is just expressing her feelings that she don’t like to be with. Maybe its better for her to ride in her private plane. If she’s an elite why is that she stays at The Manila Standard as columnist instead run her own company. Ohhhh my “GOD” actually she is trapped in a sea of great tranquility of nowhere…ha.ha.ha…..

  79. ~Leave her like that. Whining or bitching, that’s her right. If she says that we are a poor country, made up with lousy and lame politicians, well then, look around and check if she’s wrong.

~So what if she’s being an elitist? It’s her right to feel and be that way. If you like being one, be sure you got the goods to back it up.

~On that particular plane scene, I just think that’s a horrible scenario. NO TO SOCIAL SUICIDE. Isnt that an eye-opener for the people? To behave appropriately especially in public places? Leave your bad manners to the wet market or worst, at home, where it must have came from.

~Social Mannerism should be practiced properly. Socioeconomic background shows no connection to as how one should behave properly. We have always been fighting againts foreign countries descriminating the Philippines, the Filipinos. For us to achieve that, we have to show them that they are wrong, not cry and pick fight over it.

~A change of perspective is what we need. A dire need. The filipino people in general is considered as a public figure. We are the frontliners of this country. Since it is a public figure, therefore, more often than not, it becomes an object issues used by Media. Malu is Media. Whining, bitching, she is the media. For me, it’s writing on a different kind of level. I like her style, she got some balls. I’ve had enough of articles gleaming with sugarcoats and endless hope is just too frustrating that sometimes I end up skipping the entire page and just flip to the next one.

~It is obviously shown on her piece that she is not proud of her countrymen. Neither I. Look at these sad souls, working for the terrorist-looking
arabs just to feed their families with great risks at stake ie. health and lives. A modern slave. Who would ever be so proud to be a slave? When we were small, did we ever dream of becoming a Domestic Helper? No. Being a slave is not a decent job and we know that. Scrap that mask. Forget about how “big” they are being paid. It is not a decent job.

~The manners, the manners. How can they not be stereotyped?

~This overwhelming response coming from the masses, that exact way of thinking is putting a great help for OUR country’s needs for DEPRECIATION. There is no other way but down. Down to starvation, down to poverty. Down to being slaves. The problem is not Media or anybody else. It’s our (Filipinos) way of thinking. It’s too canned, too limited, too pigeonholed, too dismal. And the foreigners are absolutely right. We are just made of Coconut trees, and nice beaches, and domestic helpers and a prey to an old and withered American.

~An apology is not necessary. Really, it’s not.

  80. masyado cya mataba kaya d nagkasaya sa economy seats.
hayaan nyo na, minemenopause lng yan kya ganyan.
    ganyan talga pag tumatanda na.

im just saying na tayo din mismo ang nagpapalakas ng apoy sa issue na to, kung hahayaan mo lng yan, mamamatay din kasi yan, yung tao i mean, me karma cya, at hindi naman tau ang nagdidikta ng karma, wag kau masyado paapekto dyan, kc ang mangyari pa e lalo lng sisikat yung tao/baboy. she/it did that “article” just to have a controversial issue. let her/it die.

  81. It is also about class. She revels in her burgis diva-ness, as if that is a badge of honour, and that burgis sensibilities and wit are superior. But, really: divas are boring; the burgis are boring; their stories are boring; their odour is boring; their faces are boring. Malu Fernandez is boring. Its all so boring because she and her burgis wit and her burgis prejudices celebrate a tiny, tiny set of experiences bought by privilege and money, and is therefore not, and will never be, a celebration of the-rest-of-us authentic humanity — the stuff that truly great art and literature is about. She represents kankungan-ng-kasaysayan stuff.

  82. Malu Fernandez is FAT. on August 20th, 2007 at 10:48 am

Duuuh I’m a fat bigot bitch who can’t get any over here, so I try and hit up the foreigners for cash and secks, LOLOLOLOL. -Malu Fernandez

  83. Malu Fernandez humorous (as she said) piece making fun of OFWs is a typical mentality displayed by a citizen in a colonized country. As a writer, I expect her to be liberal on her ideas concerning human beings and much more to her kababayans. We are now in 2007, and I guess socio-economic classification is a thing of the past. Nevertheless, it is not for this poor woman who want to be different being a “member” of the elite society. By the way, I never knew one of them flying an economy class despite the urging of the travel agency. Believe me, she is not hurting the pride of the “lower class” because first of all, they don’t read an elitist magazine like People Asia and surely they have no access in the internet.

What this piggy woman is hurting are the Filipinos in general !!!!

  84. Arnold Tarrobago on August 20th, 2007 at 12:12 pm

Firing her will only be a slap on the wrist. Heck, I don’t think she even needs to work at all — mayaman siya di ba? She’s writing just to have an outlet for her bigoted thoughts. Also, will Manila Standard have the balls to fire her in the first place? Pamangkin niya daw si Migs Zubiri di ba? Babanggain ba siya ng dyaryong ito?

  85. nakakahiya sya as a filipino,,,in the truest sense of it!I am so ashamed to say that she is a filipino in every inch of it!So does that mean she is ashamed of herself too?!I have seen her once,,she talked in front of graduating HS students and i was amazed at how good she was.I thought she was good in speaking but too bad that now i disgust,,,i despiose,,,i abhor all the good thoughts i had of her!what a pity to be a low life disguised as a socialite…or should i say SOCIAL CLIMBER??????God, she was very offensive and her letter of apology was not enough to put back the pieces of the broken hearts of Filipinos who have read her article!she is such a low life form of a writer,,, i wonder does she still sleep soundly at night with all the filipinos or people feeling for filipinos who actually despise her? or she has developed such thich skin to acually not feel anything about it at all?

  86. Inngit lang sya dahil di sya pwedeng maging OFW. Hindi sya papasa sa anumang categorya. ie; sa Mid east, they will immediately send that thing back home , doon pa lang sa immigration, because isa syang BABOY. They hate pigs in that place.

The Plane scenario: kung talagang elite itong baboy na ito, dapat ay doon sya sa cargo area, para pwede sya tumihaya ha!ha!ha!. Itong “it” na ito is not even worth boarding that plane. wala pala sya pambayad kahit na sa business class…. s***t talaga! To mention few, DH can afford the business class and even the first class and often given free by their well known employers. they’ve been to other places, especially europe. Beat that Ms. Malu Baboy! Wala kang sinabi.

  87. PUNYETA KA MALOU.. KANINA PA KITA HINAHANAP.. ALIKA DITO NG MAKATAY KA NA..MARAMI NA ANG GUSTONG BUMULI SAYO.. HALIKA RITO BABOY KA.

  88. I have worked from New York to Japan, not by choice, but mainly to live far from people like this self proclaim bitch, Malu Fernandez. Working abroad is a tough ordeal, being away from your family and all,so to be avictim of this social climing BABOY makes my blood boil so high. Her kind and her connections are the very reason why the Philippine economy and society is going nowhere.

Call me a coward but the Malu Fernandez of the Philippines is the major reason why I will never consider living in the Philippines for good. I mourn the sad plight of our society and teh elitist attitude have not changed since I left six years ago.

I hope justice will prevail in this situation. Lechonin na yang Malu Fernandez na yan at ipakain sa kapwa nya mga baboy.

  89. Can we just call her a fat ignorant bitch and be done with it? She’s not the first elitist and certainly won’t be the last. She doesn’t need to be discussed as much as she seems to have been already. Honestly, how many people read Manila Standard, and her articles for that matter, anyway?

  90. for the jerk and bitch MF; ang masasabi ko lang, sabi ng preacher sa’min “we are just steward of what we have now”. What we all possesses is from God, so why boast.. don’t use you’re talent (kung talent nga)to hurt your fellowmen, upon reading your article i can feel your sadness and just try to cover it with the “wealth” that you are saying… kawawa ka naman……….hay buhay….napakahirap talaga magpakabait kung may mga taong ganito kang makikilala… kawawa naman sya…

  91. Nagpa retoke ba si malu? retoke ng utak?

This was the best example of a filipino na mayaman na yumayapa sa kapwa pinoy… She was very effective in making majority of those who read the article know that she is rich and make us feel that we are not like her… and pwede tayong tapak tapakan..

ganun pala yun… na being with OFWs in a plane is like hell?

sino-sino pa ba ang may “malu fernandez” syndrome?

  92. i am challenging everyone to love people like Malu…let us be a good example to her…she needs to be loved so she will know how to love in return…OFW man or elitista…i will forever be proud to be an OFW in Dubai… and to be in Emirates economy class flight… proud to walk in Dubai Duty Free and mingle with our Kababayans…i will be forever be proud to be a Filipino…lets help Malu to see the other side of OFW’s lives for her to understand the meaning of appreciation and love. *** to malu - God bless you.

  93. Sunshine1406 of Dubai Duty Free on August 20th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

I’m one of those Filipino Workers who overrun Dubai Duty Free as what Malu F mentioned in her nonsense article. For your info ms piggy a number of us already travelled in some parts of Europe and U.S. enjoying the comfort of business class because we can afford to do so.I’m also collecting Chanel,Christian Dior,Thierry Mugler,Bulgari,Issey Miyake,Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs perfumes. If you need more of your Jo Malone’s perfume just contact any Dubai Duty Free perfumes staff and we promise to donate some to you because it sounds like you are hungry of it.Furthermore,as a Beauty Advisor,i would like to take this opportunity to advise you to use Body Shaping Cream and Total Body Lift of Clarins. These products would be very perfect for ur fats and cellulites.Forget first about the expensive fashion accessories because i believe you need to prioritize your body so you deserve to be called a diva. Now,does this sound hilarious to you and your friends?

You better watch yourself. Planning of travelling somewhere? Humanda ka! This issue has been heard around the world. You know how fast emails travel. Baka kung saan ka pupulutin! This isn’t a threat but i’m just telling you the facts. Do you think you’ll be safe? I don’t think so fatso! You are going to regret this… i swear to Allah!

  96. Guys… nasabi na natin lahat ng dapat sabahin, pero sa sa tingin nyo ba naaapektuhan nito… i don’t think so, coz she’s a bitch wala syang paki alam sa mga sasabihin natin against her.

best thing to do is convince nalang natin lahat ng mga kakilala kamag anak at mga kaibigan natin na e-boycot ang Manila Standard Today at ang People Asia Magazine, we all know that nde naman sila directly involved dito pero dahil they allowed her na ma publish ang discirmaniting write up nya, kaya dapat din nilang maramdaman kung ano ang kaya rin nating gawin mga OFW.

BOYCOT MANILA STANDARD & PEOPLE ASIA MAGAZINE

    mabuhay ang mga OFW.

  97. People like her should be slapped and be shaken so hard that she wakes up to the reality that she is earning her living because of the Filipino people…including the “AXE and Charlie cologne” smelling OFWs. She writes in a Filipino paper and if she is not that stupid, she should realize that her paper is being read by Filipino families who were forced to be apart just to earn by working overseas in order to provide for the needs of their family. THE NERVE OF HER! Well whatever perfume she is wearing, I could still smell her stench from here…sorry missy but your brand does not suit you. I should know as I have worked previously in the Dubai Duty Free Perfume Section and I know a lot about perfumes. These sales people that you are referring to are good and hard working people who do not deserved to be insulted and discriminated. I have worked there for two years and believe me; the management has set high standards in recruiting people. Some of them might be better educated that you are! If I were the Manila Standard Today, I would fire her as what she has written is senseless and by keeping her, people may start to question the credibility of the entire paper.

  98. Malu will be a hot name in the bloggers and forums in the internet and pinag uusapan ng mga pinoy at pinay na mahilig sa tsimis. The self proclaimed diva is pretentious enough to write things which she thought would be a good laughing matter to her socialite freinds. Well Malu sumakay ka sa Emirates under economy, hindi mo ba alam ang rating ng Emirates, to feed you with info, here goes:

    Emirates Economy Class
Taking your Economy Class seat in the new Emirates A340, perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is the convenient new cabin layout. The seats are arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration (as opposed to the traditional 3-4-3 layout), which means more space and more privacy, particularly for couples travelling together (and also means the end of the dreaded ‘double excuse me’ when leaving a window seat). The seats themselves are wider and more comfortable, and come equipped with a personal 10-inch video screen on which you can enjoy more than 500 channels of entertainment (including movies-on-demand – another first for Emirates Economy Class).

  99. The overall reaction of hatred to the original article and its author would probably be a whole lot different if Malu Fernandez had the looks and build of a fashion model, now wouldn’t it?

Why does it seem that everyone reacting angrily here, as well as the other related blog articles, just HAVE TO lash out about that Bitch (with a capital “B”) being heavy and calling out insults referring to overweight individuals?

Seems to me that everyone here looks down on overweight people in general, keeping it to themselves until he/she steps on your foot or gets on your nerves..

btw, I’m not overweight; and I think Malu Fernandez went a bit too far with that article, and therefore should re-think her writing style if she wants to stay a lifestyle writer.

  100. “Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them.”

Then why didn’t she? People like her obviously don’t deserve to live anyway.

  101. […] Bigot articles such as Malu Fernandez’s have caused raucous in the Philippine internet forums and discussion avenues. Though some may […]

  102. To write such an article is definitely not a filipino and a different breed. She belongs to a powerful family, an elite pedigree and seems related to a world famous and acclaimed actress…..miss PIGGY! She’s a pig! she looks like a pig writes like a pig and thinks like a pig…a talented pig…..oink! oink! oink!

  103. i found nothing witty, acerbic or otherwise, in ms. fernandez’ article. at best, it seems to be the ramblings of an unequipped writer over a vacation trip. she is her own punishment.

  104. anti-socialite on August 19th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
…they’re all liars, frauds, tax cheats and scammers. kung sino pa ang rich sila ang nasa media. i really don’t know how they can sleep at night.

malou gave an answer to that:

    MF: I…popped my sleeping pills…

    ****

Regarding Malu as portrayed in her own article:

That’s her. There’s nothing I can do about it. And this is me, and there ain’t anything she can do about it, too. But between her and me, taking wealth, accessories and perfumes aside, who’s the better person?

A naked man without any accessory nor perfume is still a man. A clown wearing Louie Vuitton, Jo Malone perfume, and all that is branded and featured in fashion magazines, is still a clown.

  105. I think we should put her in the shoes of a DH. Say, a
couple of months. Have her work with a Saudi family
with houses barricaded with a 10-20 foot wall and
padlocked gate (only the rooftop can be seen outside).
No day offs and without possession of her passport.
Then, an egoistical maniac boss who treats her maid
both as a slave worker and a sex object for a measly
US$200/month compensation. Have her wear an Abaya and
a veil with only eyes seen.

That I think would be very funny to us now. We don’t
need another bitch to shake things up. Perhaps,
rather than making their sufferings a theatrical
comedy she should put her criticism into a helping
hands. And did she mentioned to let the politicians (including her family members who maybe a politicians themselves) make the difference? Excuse me? Did she say, politicians? That I think is real funny.

Now, the question is… Have she ever been into a kind
of situation as our DHs have been? Have she been to
Saudi where women are treated like a slaves with
limited social rights (or should I say, human rights)?
Have she ever been away from her family for 10-15
    years? I don’t think so.

Reality bites as they say and we do agree on that.
Elitist talk that way be it a simple criticism or just
    a keen observation.

Do this person think that the life of a DH is a funny
thing to write about? Indeed, it is.

  106. @VLAD

~“Vlad: Leave her like that. Whining or bitching, that’s her right. If she says that we are a poor country, made up with lousy and lame politicians, well then, look around and check if she’s wrong.”

My Response: This uproar has nothing to do with her being right or wrong. Malu actually has a point but her approach and the way she wrote the article was nothing near professional journalism. This is not writing opinions in a blog. She is writing for a magazine. You can be witty without being a bigot. You can bitch and whine without being a crab (didn’t she just put others down while glorifying herself in the article?). Since you said about rights — this is also everyone’s right to whine and bitch about Malu, so fair game, right?

~“Vlad: So what if she’s being an elitist? It’s her right to feel and be that way. If you like being one, be sure you got the goods to back it up.”

My Response: You just said it. She doesn’t have the goods to back it up… not even proper journalism writing skills and conduct.

~“Vlad: On that particular plane scene, I just think that’s a horrible scenario. NO TO SOCIAL SUICIDE. Isnt that an eye-opener for the people? To behave appropriately especially in public places? Leave your bad manners to the wet market or worst, at home, where it must have came from.”

My Response: You are right about this but you do not have to be condescending to prove a point let alone have it published. It’s like inviting yourself to the lion’s den.

~“Vlad: Social Mannerism should be practiced properly. Socioeconomic background shows no connection to as how one should behave properly. We have always been fighting againts foreign countries descriminating the Philippines, the Filipinos. For us to achieve that, we have to show them that they are wrong, not cry and pick fight over it.”

My Response: Let us stick to the issue here. The issue is irresponsible journalism. Social mannerism is another issue that we can discuss separately. Please, stick to the main issue: Malu Fernandez’ irresponsible journalism. Journalists carry responsibility with them when they write to the public. They become public figures = public properties = subject to public criticism and public action.

~“Vlad: A change of perspective is what we need. I’ve had enough of articles gleaming with sugarcoats and endless hope is just too frustrating that sometimes I end up skipping the entire page and just flip to the next one.”

My Response: With media comes responsibility. With responsibility comes consequence – praises, criticisms, and actions (such as the call to fire her). Anyone can have balls really, but make sure your balls support responsible journalism. I am for freedom of speech. I am a critic advocate myself, but please, let’s have some “standards” here fitting to true and responsible journalism. When you talk to the people, the people will respond, just like what happened now.

~“Vlad: It is obviously shown on her piece that she is not proud of her countrymen.
It is not a decent job.”

My Response: Ah, now your true colors have been exposed. Do you have any idea what it is to live in dire poverty? There is a very popular saying in Tagalog that I am sure you are aware of, “Kapit sa Patalim”. You have not lived the lives of these people for you have no clear understanding what survival means. Fact is you don’t have to really experience poverty. You just have to understand.

~“Vlad: The manners, the manners. How can they not be stereotyped? This overwhelming response coming from the masses, that exact way of thinking is putting a great help for OUR country’s needs for DEPRECIATION. There is no other way but down. Down to starvation, down to poverty. Down to being slaves. The problem is not Media or anybody else. It’s our (Filipinos) way of thinking. It’s too canned, too limited, too pigeonholed, too dismal. And the foreigners are absolutely right. We are just made of Coconut trees, and nice beaches, and domestic helpers and a prey to an old and withered American.”

My Response: I may not agree with the childish statements from many posters here but you still did not get the point. Let me repeat, this is the issue: Malu’s irresponsible journalism, and her bigotry towards a certain group of people. Malu is media (just as you said) = public property = subject to public criticism and public action.

  107. Hey Malu Fernandez,

You don’t look like an elitist, more of like a “pa” elitist…..being an OFW is not something to make fun about or make something hilarious…you’re the one who looks like a fat trying hard elitist joker….it’s not funny at all….

  108. someone na inis sa yo! on August 20th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Uhm…you complained about your bruises?! Well, you better check on your weight and size girl!…don’t blame the plane…you’re just TOO BIG for that!!!

  109. I don’t see anything generally (and personally) offensive in the article. Sounds like me yabang, pero marami namang mayayabang and it’s normal for humans - Pinoys or otherwise - the only difference is that she was vocal about it because she has the medium to do so - in a blatant kind of way siguro.

But then, the article was supposed to be funny - to the likes of a stand-up comedy theme fun, in an elite kind of way I guess.

Am not normally responsive to personal ideas and views - that’s freedom of speech - to each his own - “horses for courses”.

I am an OFW but I don’t smell Axe nor Charlie, in fact I smell like … nothing at all (LOL! me taong sanay sa expensive scents and meron ding amused sa cheap ones)… I wasn’t on the plane with her so who cares … About the kwentuhan and stuff onboard, well, I don’t constantly create friggin’ noise on board flights – oblivious of other peoples solitude - as I too gets annoyed with noise-pollution-makers on board, hirap makakuha ng tulog lalo na sa long-hauls, malaki ang aircraft, maraming passengers. I paid for my fare and so do other people on board the plane – respect is the rule of thumb and most people silently demands that. Pwede naman kseng I-save ang loud conversations in an open space, maybe later sa airport na kaya, not inside an atmosphere-controlled environ like airplanes… or siguro dahil sa excitement and boredom di naman bawal magkwentuhan on “your own space” kindof volume… not on other peoples’ space kindof volume or much more on the full-scale-plane-high-fidelity 5.1 theater-surround kindof volume…maingay na nga yung engine, maingay ka pa rin. I would bet marami ring mga tao on board (Pinoys and others) who share the same feelings with her….well…if that is the case base on her article. And that’s how elitist talks which most of us average Joes do not understand, thereby, hitting most of us below the belt. We have our ow language just as they have theirs.

That’s her travel account, that’s her story, that’s how she vividly tells her travel story, may sounds funny or witty to the elites - offensive to the subjects - yun ang kanyang description, that’s her depiction of the whole scene, the whole vista from her own eyes and perspective. Yun ang nakita nya, yun ang observations nya, yun ang naamoy nya, yun ang naramdaman nya. Though am an OFW yet I wasn’t there, I don’t smell Axe nor Charlie and I do normally sleep on board - so di ako yon! Ikaw ba yon?

Kanya kanyang mata, kanya kanyang pananaw, kanya kanyang kwento, kanya kanyang istorya – and that’s her side of the story…. and all other peoples’ reactions are the other sides of the story.

Besides, I would bet marami ring mga tao na di komportableng me maingay na katabi or malapit sa tabi … (how bout you?) – Pinoys man or ibang nationalities – the atmosphere on a long haul is conducive to sleeping… for heaven sake I need to take a nap…so SHUCK THE FUT UP!

  110. Malu you are hilarious. You hate economy class? Go business class. You hate the sand? Don’t go there. I hope you enjoy the rest of the your lonely life in the clouds full of misery and hate.

  111. I say, kill the bitch!

  112. I found her friendster profile..now’s our chance to voice out what we really feel about her…(its public, comment away)

Kaya hindi umaasenso ang Pilipinas dahil sa mga katulad mo Malu!!! translation: People you Malu is one of the main reasons why the Philippines is not developing.

  114. @ OWEFDABOLYU

Maybe the reason why most of us OFWs got offended by her “humor” was because it came from a high class socialite oozing with discriminative distinction among the “lower class” citizens. If the same joke could have came from the same group of OFWs, talagang nakakatawa. Kahit ako kaya kong mag-joke ng ganyan sa mga kapwa ko OFW na hindi sila masasaktan o mao-offend kase nga walang malisya. But because it came from her, nakakabadtrip kase you can feel her smirk where you’re reading, her jokes were most likely 90% meant. Kumbaga, you can call someone black when you’re also black and the one you called black won’t be affected. Pero subukan mong ang isang puti ay tawaging negro ang isang negro pag hindi naghalo ang balat sa tinalupan.

  115. Can I buy her? How much does she cost? Wait no need to spend my hard earned OFW money on her, she’s pathetic.
