Fire Malu Fernandez, Boycott Manila Standard Today and People Asia Magazine

To think that the paper itself is titled the Manila Standard Today, begs the question as to what kind of standards they are upholding. Indeed with such an article that was written by Malu Fernandez, The Manila Standard Today should have stepped up to the plate and fired Malu Fernandez. People Asia Magazine should never have ran that article as well.

In what will turn out to be yet another defining moment in this blogger’s short-lived career, I will again take another stand. This time, I hope that many of our readers will take this to task and spread the word. Just like the spreading of Malu Fernandez’s hateful article has occurred, let us spread one voice to combat such bigotry and intolerance in our nation.

I am proposing, effective immediately, the forced resignation of Malu Fernandez, a worthy apology from her, as well The Manila Standard Today and People Asia, and until this occurs, we should all move for a boycott on The Manila Standard Today as well as People Asia Magazine.

(Note: this specific post is going to act as a temporary signature campaign, all those who wish to take part, leave a simple comment, with your name and email, and consider yourself as having made a stand.)

Email your friends, leave a comment in this section, tell family members, write a blog post, and spread the word, that this boycott is to be nationwide, and that no one should buy The Manila Standard Today until they fire Malu Fernandez and make a proper statement of apology.

Just as Senator Ninoy Aquino died in order for our country to prosper against such intolerance and oppression, we too should not let our guard down even to a wannabe writer such as Malu Fernandez.

I hope you join me, spread the word, let’s enact the ban today.

Specific Actions We Can Take

1. Email the Newspaper and request the resignation or firing of Malu Fernandez
2. Write a blog post about your stand as well as regarding the ban and campaign to fire Malu Fernandez (I will link to your blog in this post once you comment and give me the url)
3. Don’t buy Manila Standard Today until the matter is reconciled
4. Email your friends and family about this issue
5. Spread the issue through word of mouth
6. Write or call local and national newspapers regarding this issue, and our stand to have Malu Fernandez fired

Keep on fighting bigotry, intolerance, and any form of discrimination which leads to oppression. Because in the end, such an act of discrimination is in the league of sexism and even racism itself. I bet the negros didn’t find it all too funny when called hateful names such as the N word, neither should we stand for such discrimination when it comes to the social and economic classes we find today. In a year where we saw the firing of Don Imus for his racially charged comments, I think it is high time, we show the same fierce combativeness against our own homegrown discrimination.

The measure of a persons worth is not the size of his wallet, but by the size of his heart, the meaningful relationships made throughout his or her lifetime, and how much that person gives back to the world. By this definition, it seems that Malu Fernandez is one of the poorest individuals on the face of the Earth.

Whether she truly feels that expensive perfume and shoes make her rich, is up to her, but let me ask one final question of Malu:

What good does it do a person that they inherit the world, but lose their soul in the process?

And Lastly, this is not an all out assault on The Manila Standard or People Asia, I have deep respect and admiration for the many talented writers, columnist, and editors who work for the paper, but this, I believe, must be undertaken, to remind the editor, that this kind of bigotry, whether implicit, or explicit, should not be condoned.

  1. Count me in! I will not buy the paper and the magazine from this day forward until Malu Fernandez writes her public apology and resigns from the column.

  2. Sorry I didn’t see the past entries. Her article is very insensitive. I wonder why a fellow columnist/top blogger didn’t pick this story in her blog. I will see what I can do.

I don’t read Manila standard. Maybe I will email them as well.

  3. Oh what an oxymoron, A Diva that has to fly economy. Hmmm. I’ll join as well. NO TO MANILA STANDARD TODAY and PEOPLE ASIA

  4. Ayoko talaga mga feeling above the rest.

  5. Thanks Nick for going all-out on this. Her side comments were uncalled for. She should have kept them to herself. This is bigotry at its purest. What’s worst is she did it to her fellow Filipinos.

The bad part is her pathetic attempt to justify what she wrote.

  6. I’m already spreading the word about the write up she made. Lang kwenta yang tao na yan dapat ma nationwide na ma censor sya or better yet gawing Persona Non Grata.

  7. Go Fire :) I support this! I actually read Manila Standard on our school library.

  8. Umm, off with her head!

  9. MALU FERNANDEZ IS AN INSENSITIVE FOOL!!! NO TO MANILA STANDARD AND PEOPLE ASIA MAGAZINE!!!

she should be ashamed of herself. and her “acerbic wit” was absolutely not funny.

  14. Racists or bigotry content in the media and entertainment should be eradicated.

    1. Like Malu’s attempt at “acidic” wit article.
    2. Bisayan, Muslims, or Indian ACCENTual discriminations should be stopped especially in the entertainment. This is a racist content that has been accepted as normal.
    3. Ridiculing the african race or any person with dark skin.

  16. spanx, spamming is not the answer. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but yes, if we can write to them our indignation and take a stand against this discrimination, I think that will be more productive.

  17. I read her reaction entitled “Am I a diva? Or do you lack common sense?” http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife1_july30_2007

Hindi pala marunong mag-apologize ang Malu Fernandez na ito. she writes, “Just recently, I wrote a funny article in my magazine column and my friends thought it was hilarious.” Just who actually are her friends? are they as insensitive and as discriminating as her? Stop assuming that the rich share your narrow minded opinions, Malu. It’s the people from the higher strata of society that probably started reacting to your article, because they don’t find it hilarious. You’re alone in this, girl, and you better apologize publicly TO ALL FILIPINOS. Yan and problema sa iyo e, marunong kang magsulat ng offensive, dapat marunong ka ring mag-apologize. Pero kung close-minded ka na, I bet you won’t even understand what I’m saying. I wonder if you ever have common sense. Because the sense of the common is reacting strongly against you, and you’re too insensitive to realize it.

  18. In support of your campaign. For chrissakes, that woman is stupid. I’m sure all Filipinos have at least 1 family member or friend working overseas. Howdappak does she expect the public to react? Doh.

  19. I think it’s time for a writing project, Nick.

  20. […] Fire Malu Fernandez, Boycott Manila Standard Today and People Asia Magazine  […]

  21. Filipinos everywhere should unite if we want to see action taken on Ms. Fernandez. Not only OFWs were degraded by her “acerbic” commentary, but the whole nation. We have to rid the nation of the likes of Ms. Fernandez or at least show that we will not let such denigration pass without a fight.

I will support the ban on Manila Standard and People Asia magazine. Will ask everyone I know to support it too.

This person must be taught a lesson.

  22. Malu Fernandez’s overall attitude in the article smacks of playground bullying, where all the popular and rich little girls roll their eyes and cast condescending looks at everyone else who doesn’t dress like them or come from the right families.

Her tacky name-dropping unfortunately pulls her “buddies” into the same insensitive and childish little clique. If all these people remain her friends, then they all just reinforce that sad stereotype that most of us have already outgrown.

She’s not being witty by any means. She’s plain and simply being a Mean Girl.

I wouldn’t let her comments affect me. She doesn’t have my permission to do that.

  23. if it comes from a foreigner we still can forgive her, but knowing she is a Filipino, its unforgivable!!!! Her articles speak of her personality, may konting pera lang nagmalaki na, tinatapakan na ang kapwa pilipino nya. She’s the best candidate for the abu sayaff kidnappingi might say so. Takot magasgasan ang kutis? takot sa lamok? para namang may konting ganda siya e kahit kapiraso wala e

  24. count me IN!
parusahan na yan. bitayin kung kelangan! lethal injection ang nararapat sa kanya! grrr!

  27. I don’t savor pork of any variety, whether Congressional or porcine meal. I think you may be tangling with a pig and defying the admonition that wrestling with pigs get you dirty (and they like it). I do not read the Standard and never heard of this person before your blog, but after reading her article it is obvious she is so full of herself and hubris, that medics label a narcissist. A word of caution, the campaign might boost her notoriety and establish her as an icon of the nation’s bigots.

  28. manuelbuencamino on August 17th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

    Malu opened her article with,

“I had serious trepidations about going to the beach about going to the beacj. You see, I hate the sand, the bugs and the mosquitos…”

And most of all she hates swimsuits!

  30. nick,

    tama ka, no need to spam those addresses;
i’d rather find malu’s friendster page. hahaha!

sa totoo lang, that remorseless ingrate
has offended me to the very core of my Pinoy Soul.

here’s some more about her from my buddy, Herb d Perv:

THE TOP 7 THINGS TO SAY TO MALU
IN CASE YOU RUN INTO (or over) HER:

    1. Please kill yourself now while the prices of PORK are high.

    2. Since you travel a lot, why not go to Iraq and wear a T–shirt with the word “INFIDEL” on it.

  31. This obnoxious abomination’s bank account couldn’t possibly be empty after her trip from Greece, if you notice all her product endorsements in her article, maybe they should sue her for mentioning their brand.

  32. Sobrang isa siyang kakaibang nilalang. I don’t know if she has the knowledge that OFW is termed as the ‘bagong bayani’ of our country. Kawawa naman siya at masyado lang siyang confined sa sheltered life niya at di niya alam ang katotohanan. Mukhang ang daming insecurities sa katawan ng babaeng yan ah. tsk tsk tsk…

  33. You do know she is the aunt of Miguel Zubiri. Joe Zubiri’s wife, Vicky, is her sister.

  34. I’m one of many who have blogged about this issue:
    http://sillingtonhouse.blogspot.com/2007/08/abominable-snob-woman.html

Furthermore, I’ve emailed both People Asia and Manila Standard, PLUS the Philippine Daily Inquirer for good measure, in case the other 2 publications refuse to acknowledge this backlash against their “divalicious” columnist. I’ve also emailed the POEA, since they’re responsible for defending the dignity and honor of our OFWs, which Malu Fernandez has spit in the face of. I’m hoping somehow this all comes back to bite her in the ass. Maybe we can arrange for an OFW lynch mob in an airport somewhere…

  35. Today, I wrote a feeback letter to the editors of People Asia Magazine and The Manila Standard. Here’s a copy of what I wrote.

I also wrote to Administrator Baldoz of POEA, Administrator Roque of OWWA, and Department of Tourism Secretary Durano.

I also enlisted the help of The Filipino Channel (ABS-CBN Global Limited).

  36. Yes, when she dies her hell will be exactly how she described it – cramped economy class cabin with balikbayan co-passengers in all size, color, shape and dialect! BUT they will intentionally harass her and keep her from sleeping, not even a hundred and six bottles of dormicum could send her to lala land. Oh, and God will make sure that all the Filipinos she’s with in this flight from hell would be the impierno’s cream of the crop.

And how’d she get to be a writer anyway? Seriously, does having money, jet-setting and having all the expensive accessory and make-up enough to merit anyone a column in a national broadsheet and two pages in People Asia? I am disappointed with People Asia and Manila Standard Today! The whole damn article is so sophomoric she might as well have started with “Dear Diary, for Summer break I went to Boracay with my friends and there were so many flies! I couldn’t swat all of them away from my precious precious skin! (sad face inserted), it was a good thing I brought Bygon with me! (happy face inserted) Then we went to Greece and ate in an American café and it was so funny because we were in Greece and we were in an American café! …blah, blah, yaditty, yaditty, yap, yap!” There’s nothing even slightly humorous about it, if she thought that sneering at other Filipinos who do not smell like her will add some spice to her article, she was right because it made her sound even more pathetic.

She needs to go back to grade school for English Composition 101… or 100, they taught this sometime in Grade 3, because she has completely forgotten that an article has to have a point – a reason for being – my professor would have called her article verbal diarrhea. And then she can go take up Civics 1 again, just to remind her than when she is slighting her kababayan, she is also slighting herself. She defended herself in her MST article against all the bad breath she got from that People Asia article saying she really was just an in-your-face type of person especially in the face of stupidity, really? So, greeting a fellow kababayan inside a plane cabin or smelling of Axe and Charlie cologne is stupidity????

  37. apparently, Malu has been writing in this style for quite some time now…

  40. i know some people she mentioned on her previous articles. they’re ashamed of what this fecal matter had to say about OFWs. even her colleagues think she was way out of line.

  41. People Asia can be reached at peopleasia@gmail.com. I’ve sent them a letter already, but have received no reply yet.

napaka feeling high class naman ito si Malu. Join ako sa pag boycott at sasabihin ko sa mga friends and family ko. Just want to add na balikbayan ako, and not only was I angered, but my heart was also pierced. The OFW is the symbol of The Filipino’s drive and sacrifice, sana huwag nalang si Malu magsulat kahit saan. Yan mga newspapers at magazines, dapat mag take note sa saying ng ABS-CBN, “in the service of The Filipino People”. This article was a total disservice, and frankly I’m ashamed that she’s Filipino.

  46. Count me in! I have actually written The Manila Standard telling them the same: get rid of Malu Fernandez. Her kind does not deserve the space in their newspaper. Let me repeat it here, once they get rid of her, I hope a mob of OFWs and their families would be outside the Manila Standard offices para tuhugin siya ng buhay sa kawayan. Her squeals and yells would definitely be music to the ears of the OFWs that she just insulted.

  47. Count me in!!! Don’t buy Manila Standard. To hell with this Malu Fernandez…pwe!!!!!

  48. count me in.

  49. Boycott!!!

I’ll be blogging about this tomorrow.

  51. It is sad, really sad and I think the Manila Standard and People Magazine should do something about this atrocity. I also think that we should take this opportunity to show the world why we are fierce at being proudly Pinoy. Here’s my post - http://aileenapolo.blogspot.com/2007/08/i-am-filipino-and-proud-to-be-one.html

  52. Is she for real?????????????? Nakakainis siya.

  53. Who the hell is she? I may not be an OFW but many of my relatives are, and I know for a fact that most of us have a relative who is an OFW working his/her guts just to feed his/her family and keeping our economy afloat. Konting respeto na lang para sa mga OFW. I may be a stinky linky, but not a divine divalicious babe… errr like the pig in the “babe movie” a few years back.

  54. I don’t read The Manila Standard Today at all! It’s so cheap noh?!

  55. I love Bryanboy’s response to all this hoopla…

    http://www.bryanboy.com/bryanboy_le_superstar_fab/2007/08/malu-fernandez-.html

  56. Join din ako. People like Malu should not awarded. She looks down on her own country man who strive to death in another nations leaving behind her love one para lang mabuhay. Shame on you Malu! I think you should go back to school and not just learned all the designer label but actually learn not to be ignorant about the world.

  57. […] to take a stand against Malu Fernandez of Manila Standard Today and People Asia Magazine. Read more about it here. I don’t read either of the two publications so I can’t really boycott them as […]

  58. Well, she and her friends were amused of her article, and can be compared to white racists racial jokes targeting blacks and asians amusing too.

She spoke rudely about Boracay and insulted not only the OFW Heroes but the entire FILIPINO people because of her rude words about us in the Third World. Her reactions insulted even the schooled employees of fastfood chains, and she keeps on insulting the readers because they haven’t read thick books.

The government can also charge her with TREASON for endangering the economic stability of our country.

Patalsikin natin si MALU FERNANDEZ, and I don’t care where she will go.

  60. Sunugin, sunugin, sunugin! LOL!

  61. Maayong Buntag, gikan sa San Francisco!

I’ve sent an e-mail to my friends in my press club, Riyadh, London, and other Filipino global leadership who are focused on helping OFWs, informing them about this latest Filipino blogosphere’s fracas.

I totally believe in the empowerment of Overseas Filipino Workers and Overseas Filipinos worldwide — that this outrage about a columnist being accused of bigotry (re: OFWs) got my attention. Truly, I think Malu Fernandez doesn’t know what it’s like to be living in a foreign land as a contract worker or a visiting tourist where the sight of any Filipino is a welcome antidote to homesickness.

What if I were to tell you that some OFWs and nurses in Europe told me last year (during my visit to London) that they have problems with nurses having an arrogant attitude toward the domestic helpers who had arrived before they did (in the early 1970’s). “Social class” discrimination is probably unique to the Philippines and similar developing countries.

There is a shared truth among ethnic journalists and other media professionals here in the US: that we represent the VOICES of our communities, when mainstream media oftentimes doesn’t look at our in-language, in-culture news as “news” — because we’re considered minority populations. That’s precisely why ethnic media umbrella organizations such as New America Media exist.

I’m mentioning this perspective because Malu Fernandez needs to understand that, with her supposedly insouciant observations about OFWs, she comes out being perceived as shallow-minded, ignorant, and disempowering. Malu, you’re also making our work in helping promote and implement Filipino empowerment worldwide a lot harder. With your flippant comments, you seem to be saying that OFWs are not important, thus they don’t need to be honored. Many of us who live overseas want to be sure that OFWs know their rights in any foreign soil that they consider home for a contracted time or permanently.

My call to action for Malu Fernandez would be a public apology and a writing assignment for her: To work as an OFW (a domestic helper would be good!) — and who goes through the process of being recruited, going to the CFO offices, etcetera. The whole enchilada!

People are calling for her resignation BUT I think if her newspaper sends her out on this kind of writing assignment for three months, and evaluates her article as publishing-worthy or not, then that resignation would be a more potent solution by then — and who knows, her credibility could still be restored!

Inasmuch as I deplore Malu Fernandez’s excuse of using “dry wit” to keep her audience entertained with her “Louis Vuitton” eyes(”eyebags”), and understanding the uproar among media colleagues and bloggers, I would rather practise compassion and ASK MALU FERNANDEZ TO LIVE THE LIFE OF AN OVERSEAS FILIPINO CONTRACT WORKER FOR THREE MONTHS AND WRITE ABOUT IT.

Then, and only then, maybe we will know if Malu Fernandez understands why we treat OFWs as our modern-day heroes. That is, if her gold, open-toed sandals will survive her personal OFW journey.

    In peace,

    Lorna
    Filipino Community Publicist

  62. sama ako dito.this woman does not deserve a writing gig.

  63. I agree that Malu Fernandez, in all her wannabe-glory (Socioeconomic background notwithstanding, her clear lack of delicadeza proves one thing: she has no class), needs to get her comeuppance, preferably by getting her ass fired by People Asia and the Manila Standard.

However, this part of your stance bothered me:
“Just as Senator Ninoy Aquino died in order for our country to prosper against such intolerance and oppression, we too should not let our guard down even to a wannabe writer such as Malu Fernandez.”

Although making a stand against people like Malu Fernandez is generally a good thing, to compare that to what happened to Ninoy Aquino is a bit disingenuous. I seriously doubt that you think her comments are equal in scope and effect to the Martial Law years, so using it in this context is just slightly offensive to his memory, and the memory of all the other people who’ve sacrificed their lives for something much greater.

    Just my two cents.

  79. i tried to look for her article pero mukhang they took it down na. pero after reading bits and pieces of it in your website, feeling ko na-transplant ako nung panahon nila Dona Victorina at Padre Damaso. there is nothing witty nor humorous in her article. her pathetic attempt at “apologizing” by way of her response to the outrage brought by her ignorance and stupidity only proves she doesn’t know the meaning of wit and humor. lest she forgets that if not for the OFWs, baka matagal ng bagsak ang economy at gobyerno ng Pilipinas. so she can shove her “apology” up her arse. the least that Manila Standard should do is to come out with a full page apology AND fire this poor excuse of a human being named Malu Fernandez. she is a disgrace to our country and our culture.

  80. She should have brought her own PIG PEN!!!:)when she boarded the plane, by then she will be comfortable in her own place. Check this out:

  82. Come on everyone, can we be sober about some things? First of all, have any of you (non OFW pinoy travellers) ever travelled to another country for a tour and did not encounter obnoxious pinoy OFWs? Believe me, sobrang nakakahiya talaga karamihan ng OFWs pag nagsamasama. Puro pasaway and asal kalye! And please stop portraying OFWs as heroes! They are compensated handsomely for their decision to work away from home and their loved ones. Heroes are volunteer workers who are not paid any premiums at all(like missionaries and volunteer doctors and nurses). Heroes are also those who chose to stay out of pure dedication even with meager pay. Stop romanticizing the OFWs!

  83. This Malu Fernandez should have brought her PIG PEN when she boarded the place, so that she should have had her own private place.:)

“Ang baboy, bihisan mo man, bigyan ng trabaho, dalhin sa Boracay, bigyan ng LOUIS VUITTON bag, pasakayin sa Emirates, eh mananatiling BABOY PA RIN! ”

Malu Fernandez = what a freaking biatch!

  91. I don’t know Malu Fernandez and I don’t buy the paper as well. I’m just too glad that I left before the merger of the two papers (Manila Standard and TODAY, owned then by Rep. Teddy Locsin Jr.). If Teddy Boy was at the helm, she would have fired that bitch at the quick blink of an eye.

But then again, my sincerest apologies to you. I noticed the second to the last paragraph, “What good does it do a person that they inherit the world, but loose their soul in the process?”

I just think it should have been “lose.”

    Thanks.

  97. Malu just jumped from a nobody to a stupid nobody. Congrats Malu.

  98. Count me in…this woman or should I say this PIG!! has a big problem. She does not realize the consequences of her rubbish writings. Millions of OFWs around the world will uproar against you Ms Malu Fernandez!!

  99. here is my say on this idiotic woman:

    http://www.xanga.com/fallenbutflying/610772063/item.html

  100. I am wondering why I couldn’t find my earlier post. But out of my intention to make a stand against this bigotry, I am recapturing what I have just written.

I am truly wondering how a Journalist like her came up with such kind of an article. The more that I am wondering why her publishers have accepted her write-up and had it gone to the press.

First point, does she ever read the Economics or Finance section of the papers? Is she in the dark abuot the recent strengthening of the power of Philippine peso due in part to the contribution of the OFWs?

Second point, what have we, OFWs, done to you Malu Fernandez to receive such ire? What have we done to you to make you feel like slashing your wrist rather than share a plane with our kind? Are we some sort of a disease that you have to get away from?

The cliche - the PEN is mightier than the Sword is an eternal universal truth. What ever happened to Manila Standard to forget this - you being the Beacon of Truth? What ever happened to you to lose good taste? Yes, there is FREDDOM OF SPEECH but there is also such a thing as RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM. You are at the helm of this. How come an article like Malu Fernandez’s was given space? How can such a convoluted mind warped by 17 kgs of make up and accessories be made worthy of pages of insults to OFWs? Being journalists, you should use the power of the Pen with sensibility and sense of responsibility. Where are you coming from?

Have you forgotten your race, Malu Fernandez? Have you forgotten the tenets of your faith - regardless of whatever religion you are embracing? Has glitter and pomp already deaden your sense of compassion?

You may feel as if you are not answerable to each of us. However, there is a Supreme Power to Whom you shall be answerable.

Yield your power as Journalists to become catalysts of change! You have used the power of the pen irresponsibly. You have pierced a sword in each of us not to mention the hearts of our loved ones whom we left back home.

You have wounded us with your sword of snobbery. You have degraded us and the outcome of our concerted effort to contribute to the Philippine economy. I do not think that a million pages of apology will be enough to compensate for your bigotry.

  101. titoadam…rich people can be annoying too, though, can’t they? the problem is not with people being OFWs. the problem is with people being obnoxious. at least when those OFWs were being “annoying” to her, they were just trying to be friendly. she, on the other hand, was being too high-and-mighty for the throng. please. we’re all human beings. who is she (and who are you) to say who is and isn’t deemed good enough to breathe the same air?

then again, that is just the way snobs, bigots and elitists think. i doubt any of this will ever change the way they are, but maybe if people make enough noise, they’ll think twice before opening their yap traps.

  102. I join in this campaign. Something should be done to curtail such mentality.
Everyone, if you could please scroll up and read titoadam’s entry…

  103. Some bloggers seem to think we’re being hypocrites for being outraged over all this. Isn’t there an elitist in all of us? What’s the difference between MF and us? A lot.

  104. Fry that pig!!!

  105. I just received a mail with attachments of those articles. Oo nga diva siya, diva bavoy ang mukha niya? Kahit gaaano kamahal yung perfumes niya, amoy bavoy parin.O, diva vavoy talaga siya.

  106. Yes, try reading again the entry of titoadam, I guess they [he and Malu the Pig] came from similar tribe], I wonder what we [OFWs] have done to titoadam and to Malu to deserve such treatment, or is it pure insecurities or maybe jealousy???

    titoadam’ posting:

  107. LUSCIOUS, a fashion boutique in Glorietta and Gateway malls, is partially owned by the “mahaderang matapobre”- Malu Fernandez. I hope this bit of info that my husband informed me about is also spread, then let’s see what sort of karma strikes her.

  108. Maturity, both emotional and intellectual, doesn’t come with age. It seems Malu has a soft spot on both. I like the suggestion of letting Malu live in a foreign country without Pinoys or even Asians for at least three months. Might be helpful if Manila Standard and People’s Asia finance this “activity” for Malu.

Another point is the mention of those names; my Adidas all terrain, my Louis Vuitton, etc. What’s in a name? Nasa likod po ng mga pangalan na yan ay mga paslit (child labor) na nakatali (nakababad) sa kanilang upuan. I suggest Malu to ponder on this, “Ilang kamay ba ang pinagdaanan ng Adidas all terrain nya bago nya naisuot? o ilang ordinaryong tao ba, mapalokal o international man, ang pinagdaanan ng mga produktong kinain nya doon sa American restaurant?”

    Count me in, kaibigan.

  109. FIRE HER.. I just found out who she is and she makes me sick.. She’s a fat swine w/ no class whatsoever..

  110. Malu Fernandez

You made a lot of people hate you with your harsh words and your horrible perspective on us OFWs. I hope you’re happy if this was what you were expecting. But if you’re concerned that you hurt a lot of people… I suggest you apologize sincerely because you made enemies within the OFW community not only in Dubai but the whole world for that matter.

Being part of the “elite” social class, you should obviously be a well educated person; you would not be in media if you weren’t, so I don’t have to point out our importance as OFWs to the country. But our importance should not be a reason to NOT belittle us. You should not deride us or, any other social class for that matter, because it is basically a very insensitive thing to do. Its something we Filipinos find very immoral. It is something that is just plain bad.

You just don’t say those things for whatever reasons you may have. Whether you’re just staying true to your “media persona/attitude” or for an agenda that only you may know. But if you said them because it’s your character and the way you were educated and brought up, then clearly your morals are very appalling.

You made the world so much harsher and much more difficult to live in.

…what someone who read your column would not give to be on the same plane with you to show you what a “little private hell” really means.

Lomar (an OFW in Dubai… no I don’t wear axe colognes)

  111. Someone said, “isn’t there an elitist in all of us”. NO. THERE’S A CAPACITY MAYBE, BUT NOT THE CONDITION OF BEING.

  112. […] sinimulang kampanya sa Tingog.com upang patalsikin sa kanyang posisyon bilang kolumnista sa Manila Standard Today ang balasubas walang kasing kitid ng isip at matapobreng […]

  113. count me in too! she’s so full of herself and even though, it’s partly true that sometimes it’s really funny or awkward how some OFW’s sounds like what Malu have just described, but they way she told it- its definitely so degrading. Those things happen not only with our national citizens but others too. She is so “matapobre” kailangan bang ipagkalat sa buong mundo gaano ka refine ang taste mo and ur perspective about things? Hala, sige na- sosi at elite ka na..pero wag mo ng ipaglantaran. Hay-ano ba yan!

  114. Filipino’s should lift his co-Filipinos and not degrade or belittle them. It’s so disappointing that there are writer’s out there who wrote so nasty about their countrymen. Instead, People like Malu should write something nice to help ease the pain and suffering of the people taken over by the hardship his country had brought them. I am not a Filipino but my wife is one.Filipino’s are kind, hard-working and caring people. They go out of their country because of the downfall of the government and the almost zero benefits it had left of his country men. We live abroad holding of the promise of a farer life but she is and I am proud of her native land. I’ve enjoyed dealing with Filipinos and I’ve had lots of friends there.Yes, the Philippines should be wary as well because most of the smart ones and really good ones are going out of the country. Who will stay and will say long live the Philippines?

  115. Oh my… who is this insensitive fool??? I’ve never even heard of her but I felt like kicking her big fat ass!!! How dare she criticize OFW’s!!! Girl… unfortunately, we the “smelly OFW’s” are the savior of our dear country’s economy. And it really breaks my heart to hear “social climbers - like this person name Malu” degrade all the hardship we had to make an honest living. I support every move you guys can do to send this damned person to “hell” where she belongs.

  116. I’m so mad and like Miriam Defensor Santiago, I am frothing in the mouth! get this lady some education!

Shame on The Manila Standard and People Asia!!!

  118. Sorry po sa nagsasabi na i boycott ang LUSCIOUS dito ako di agree yes we are right to be upset at her and what she writes. We should be upset only HER i personally believe na di na dapat ba madamay yung employees nya.. kawawa naman di ba they have families to feed din naman. Should we let them pay for the mistakes of their boss. Di naman nila kasalanan yung ginawa ng boss nila.

Saka wag naman laiitin yung weight nung tao.. Im plus sized too so parang people are now generalizing us.. Wag naman

  119. malu fernandez whoever she is.. i agree with all those comments about her.. can we stone her to death..? wait.. that’s not too harsh chop her into pieces.. oops! anyways, the things being said to her are just fair enough to ler her feel how stupid of her to write such an article.. (if she does feel bad about it i bet she’s partying for her triumph to catch our attention..ryt.?)
it’s ok to be proud of what you have and what you’ve reached but don’t discriminate others just to make you feel a little higher..

  120. I have cast my vote above and can now kibitz. Jonathan, your sympathy for Filipino sensibilities indicate a remarkable talent of your Filipino wife – taming her non-Filipino husband. May I suggest, however, that your nose ring not be displayed in public places in her homeland (to preclude hen-pecked derision?)Just kidding.

  121. What a complete and utter vapid ignoramus. Ang kapal ng mukha niya. Hindi pa marunong magsulat. Kung diring-diri siya sa kapwa niya, dapat pala ay hinulog na siya ng eroplano sa gitna ng Aegean Sea. That bullshit of this caliber was printed in two major, supposedly reputable publications is unacceptable. As people of an already divided country, we must speak out against bigotry and oppression in whatever form they manifest.

  122. By the way, why are we calling her a journalist or a writer??? She’s neither, she’s just a sorry excuse for a human being, malungkot siguro childhood niya kaya ganyan siya manglait, no?!

  127. she’s just trying to prove the world how uneducated she is.

  128. Ms. Piggy-Piggy Oink-Oink is nothing but a second grade, trying hard, copycat. She is so self centered and ignorant that she should stay in the tin can of sardines until she learn to live the life in the real world. Puro ka-plastikan that not even her 17kg of make-up and accessories can do something to make her just a little bit cute. I guess Vicky Belo and Dr. Calayan rejects her unrepairable image. The best that MS and People Magazine can do to make things right, at least even a great damage has already been done, is to kick that big fat ass of Ms. Porky and send her back to her pig-pen until she is re-educated, or send her to La-Loma to roast. I don’t see anything funny on her article, and if her friends think that sort of writing is funny, ang bababaw naman ng kaligayahan ng mga friends nya.

We OFWs do not need a big fat ass bitch to shake our world, we already have a lot of politicians, including some in Ms. Porky’s family, doing a lot of funny circus, tumbling here and there, making magics in our economy, trying to entertain us, so why bother pork and beans.

Comments that are essentially profanity and that does not have substance to it, may have to be deleted or edited. 134. Ms. Malu diva-divahan, you are an obnoxious horrible person! and you have the nerve of asking if people around you are lacking common sense? there’s is nothing funny about a mother who suffers being away from his family just to be able to raise her kids in a good way. My mom is an OFW, how dare you insult her. How dare you make fun of people who tried to make a decent living by being out of the country!

frankly, i don’t see wit or even a strain of so-called intelligence in your article. Shouldn’t all writers know about responsible journalism??? Bago ka manlait ng ibang tao, tingnan mo nga sarili mo! You are the living proof of being “HYPROCRITE”! As a diva and jet-setter as you are claiming to be, why would you even dare to fly economy? on a budget??? errr…kala ko ba rich ka?

  138. Nakalulungkot na malaman na may ganitong klaseng nilalang. Haaaay. Narito ang aking kwento:

    http://angloloniyo.blogspot.com/2007/08/gigil.html

  139. I condemn the article of Fernandez. I hold People Asia Magazine and Manila Standard Today responsible for allowing such article to see the light of day.

I am a graduate student in a foreign country taking up Public Administtation. This early, I have seen how our country has been so left behind and why, and how we have missed a lot. It is a painful truth that I and my other Filipino classmates sometimes just sit on the ground of our campus and rant against our collective misfortune. And what is even more painful is that we have the talent pool, that there is so much hope in our people and in our country.

The article of Fernandez, yet again, highlights, no emphasizes, why our country is what it is today.

One is that that the Philippine “elite” has done nothing for the good of our country. They have milked us, abused us, exploited our resources, corrupted our government. And they never cared less. Philippine history is replete with cases of how Emilio Aguinaldo had Andres Bonifacio killed, of how the ilustrados of post-colonial times connived with new colonial masters to protect their business interests, of how Cory Aquino bungled the agrarian reform program which could have been a solution to our poor, hapless farmers, of how only a few control over billions of pesos in our government, of how the “elites” who entered government have only further enriched themselves. I can go on and on. The list is endless.

Another is how Philippine media have greatly contributed to the miseducation of the Filipino people. The media is a very powerful tool, as shown in the recent elections. But, what do our countrymen hear, see and read from our media? Crap, really. Except for an exceptional few, mainstream media are full of trash - things that idiotize our masses. Soap operas, variety shows, articles such as the one by Fernandez.

And why is this? Because media and the elite reinforce each other. That by keeping our people ignorant and uninformed, they continue their hold on to society. They continue to win elections (like the relatives of Fernandez). They can continue robbing our country and getting rich at our expense. In the end, the elite is the biggest beneficiary of the miseducation and ignorance of the Filipino people.

I think in the end, what we need is to define what, as a country, is good for us. What is our common agenda for nation-building. What is good for the country. And maybe, by then, Fernandez may find her role and what she can do best for the nation and rise abover her petty, limited, and convoluted world.

  140. First & foremost, napaka-arte nya eh di naman sya kagandahan! Hinde nya ba nakikita ang sarili nya?!?! if you are not used to Economy seats even in Best plane in the world eh di mag business class or first class seat ka! tutal mayaman ka naman! mayabang ka pa!

I worked in a regional newspaper before and we don’t care about our circulation as long as we have advertizers.

  142. please email/send message to possible venues

like the senate and major broadsheets.. just googled them guys.

  143. Her tongue-in-cheek comments about the OFW’s are totally inappropriate considering her article was for public consumption. They are not funny at all, and her statements reflect bigotry – she insists she is above the rest. What gobsmacked me most was her response to this melee. She just did not get it? Perhaps she thinks her articles are mere blogs that represent her stuck-up opinion and elitist predisposition. Perhaps she thinks that writing for the public does not carry any responsibility to the audience. For her to believe this is plain idiocy.

And who is her editor? Why did the magazine publish this article anyway? They are also to be blamed and be held responsibility for because they are the institution/s that tolerate and approve this.

But, just a side note, while reading her article I can’t help but feel very ashamed for her. She sounded like she is a full of herself teenager writing for her diary at home. Dropping names of people, her obsession of the high and mighty lifestyle, telling the world how utterly picky-hard to please she is, defending the high standards she holds on to, the out-and-out self masturbation of her image as a modern-day worldly woman, and she thinks all these are witty and cool to be published for public consumption. No - it’s pathetic. This is not travel and lifestyle journalism. This is shameful.

  144. I find her not humorous after all. I blog about this on my blogsite.
However, we should not also fail to see her point. Filipinos working abroad should also not forget the ethics of a good citizen. Knowing this, I blog about the solution of what seems to be her point said anyways, in a very provocative way.

  146. count me in! it’s with people like this that i wish, martial law is in force in the Philippines.. Firing squad for people who badmouth the Philippines.. hehehe..

  147. this malu fernandez should be given her own doses of medicine. 1. let her go back to school 2. let her learned the values of being a true filipino 3. let her employers fire her 4. (incase they will not fire her) let her feel being an OFW, the heartache to be working far from our loved ones 5. or let her hide coz we really dont know when she can encounter an OFW who knew about her article and will be fuming mad to roast her, lechon style…

  148. I would definitely recommend an immediate termination for this self-proclaimed DIVA! I am just wondering why you opted for economy class though…maybe you have maxed out your credit card?

  149. I will boycott People Asia and Manila Standard and so will my family.
She deserves to be persona non Grata.

  153. Conceited, egoistic bitch. The hell does she thinks she is. Fire her now. We demand an apology!!!!!!!!!!!

  154. I am outraged with her comments specially when she reitariated when she flew using Emirates Airlines at puro daw pinoy ang nasa Dubai International Airport nagbebenta ng electronics at pabango…so what is wrong with that…She is so FULL OF HERSELF! Napaka discriminatory yung comments nya sa mga OFW.
I agree she should be reprimanded for her irresponsible article and derogatory comments against OFW’s.

  155. Just a sweet regards to Ms. Malu Fernandez…

    You are a F-U-#-*-@-N-G Bitch!!!!
