• 1.9 million Afghan refugees represent the largest group of concern, according to the U.N. High Council for Refugees.
• 1.2 million Iraqis are internally displaced persons (those who have fled but remain within their own state). Thursday, Islamic leaders in Somalia decreed that the country is “in a state of war.”
• 50,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo have fled violence this December.
Go see the film Blood Diamond. Become disgusted by the acts of violence depicted. Become outraged at the atrocities that have been committed in the name of engagement rings and Hollywood bling.
Replace “diamonds” with “oil” and “Sierra Leone” with “the Middle East,” then cross-apply the concept to other regions of the world dealing with the backlash of demands fueled by our consumerist society.
Go watch Blood Diamond and instead of shaking your head and saying, “How terrible” - before returning to status quo - dare to wake up the next morning with the same sense of fury you felt the night before.
