Yet Another Focus Date: 06-11-07

It’s yet another focus date for the long running saga of the 2007 Philippine Midterm Elections. This time, as was the case before, Maguindanao will once again weigh in the minds of TEAM Unity and The Genuine Opposition. We await the homeless and deaf Lintang Bedol, as well as the local officials who will have to explain to Chairman Abalos what has happened in Maguindanao.

At this point, Basilan, Surigao del Norte, and Maguindanao are all that is left for proclaiming the last two Senate spots. The 11th spot may be proclaimed after the canvassing of Basilan and Surigao del Norte this upcoming Monday.

The big focus, however, will be Maguindanao, whether someone can produce the Municipal Certificates of Canvass and Statements of Votes that has eluded The Comelec for the last three weeks. I’d like to remind everyone that the Provincial Certificates of Canvass that Lintang Bedol showed 19 candidates with zero votes. But Lintang Bedol has stuck with his assertion that these are legitimate results.

Abalos has been pushing for a Special Elections, but we’ll see if the opposition will allow this, as they are also prepared to take this up to the Supreme Court if push comes to shove. It’s been a marathon indeed, and Monday, although an important day, will definitely not be the end of the race.
