The Sinulog, Atong Ang, and The Elections

The Sinulog in Cebu was another great success, another big crowd, and another chance for Cebu to showcase it’s diverse culture. So, I did take another little break, but since the news probably will not let up until after the elections, we will move full speed ahead with blogging about the current state of our nation, especially in the political arena.

First up on the list is Charlie “Atong” Ang, who has finally implicated Erap on the plunder case regarding the P130 million in kickbacks. I honestly didn’t think he would actually give Erap up, but with life in prison facing him, I’m guessing he started to see the big picture. Atong Ang is banking on the fact that he will be able to get the lesser sentence of bribery which is 3-6 years, compare that to life in prison for plunder, and loyalty is thrown out the window.

Other news, it seems that the UNO and third force senate slates are one and the same. Maybe they finally figured out that they were doing themselves more harm than good, if they introduced two opposition parties to run against the Administration’s Senate slate. With all the hubbub with who will run for senate, the Administration has kept mum on who exactly is their pick for the upcoming elections. Apparently, the administration party will announce 5 of their picks within a week, so that they can start gearing up for the elections. The rest of the slate will be announced by February 12. Thank goodness, with Valentines on the way, I didn’t want to have to think about who the candidates were going to be (sarcasm)…

This “Third Force” is honestly getting on my nerves. If they actually had a plan to begin with, it wouldn’t seem like a last minute project for bored politicians that had nothing else to do but be seen as still alive and kicking. As the steam has already gone out of the whole “Third Force” announcement, and it’s now becoming even more obvious that they have no clue as to who they really want for their slate, or if they can even get their candidates together, and what they actually stand for. Because up to this point, it seems to be all rhetoric and no real platform as to what this entity is. Is it truly independent, pro-Administration, anti-Administration, liberal, conservative, pro-opposition, just give us an answer!

But I really shouldn’t be yelling, because no one really has a platform, it’s all about popularity really. Even the Administration’s party hasn’t really set up a real plan as to what they will be running on this election season. So, who’s in a hurry, no one has a plan, no one really cares if they have a plan, just as long as the candidates are well known and well funded, that seems to be the key to success.

And don’t forget about our happy-go-lucky former senator, former coup plotter, and ever smiling Gringo Honasan. He will also be running for The Senate as an independent. They probably won’t let him out to “campaign”, so his sons will have to do all the campaigning for him.

Loren Legarda, also is trying to distance herself from her ex-husband, Leviste, and all she can do now is “pray for him”. You go girl Loren! You shouldn’t have to put up with that stuff anymore, you’ve moved on, and you don’t owe him anything. It’s a good decision on her part, and it sets a good example to her children and our nation in general that no one is above the law.

So, with Sinulog done with, Atong Ang ready to strike a plea bargain, UNO and “Third Force” trying hard to compose their slate, the administration ready to pull out their senate cards, Honasan running again, Leviste to be arraigned, and Loren trying to set a good example.. We’ve got enough news fodder to work with until next week…

So read up, stay informed, the elections are coming, but day to day events are still happening. Be nationalistic, have your voice heard, and state your opinions. We are nearing another crossroad in our nation’s history, we must not stay asleep, but open our eyes to what is happening within and around The Philippines.
