The Charter Change Drug

Despite mounting criticism and opposition, The Administration and its allies have been pushing Charter Change like it was the new wonder drug of the third world. Saying that it will cure all our ailments. Poverty, education, social welfare, etc.

These things will be better tackled if we change to a new type of government.

There have been trial cases for this drug of course. The most visible example would be England. Although, this drug has not been tested on The Filipino people.

But what is the sentiment of The Filipino people when it comes to Charter Change?

According to Pulse Asia “Nearly the same percentage of Filipinos either favors or rejects charter change”

39% in favor of Charter Change,
42% against Charter Change, and
19% are undecided.

But what if they we had to vote today?

According to the survery
39% of Filipinos would cast their vote,
31% are not inclined to vote, and
31% are undecided.

But the most stark findings of this survey (at least to me) was when individuals were asked specifically about a Parliamentray system, Federal system, unicameral legislature..

Here are the results

Present Government to Parliamentary — 59% against
Centralized Government to Federal System — 60% against
Bicameral to Unicameral — 62% against

What this just means is that most Filipinos are likely to vote against proposals for a parliamentary system, a federal system, and a unicameral legislature in a plebiscite on charter change.

There are definitely a large portion of the population that are still undecided when it comes to Charter Change, but when it comes to the specific issues, they become more adamant. Still, Filipinos at this point in general would knock Charter Change down to the ground.

I will contend, that I don’t know either whether or not a unicameral system of government is better for our nation, but a Charter Change would be more likely in my opinion if it weren’t this administration leading that charge and if we weren’t in this current political climate.

A new political climate with more trustworthy personalities would probably have more support. So…. let’s wait until the 2007 elections, and see how everything turns out. It seems this administration is always hastily making decisions specially when it comes to the course of our nation, thinking that if they move fast enough, they may just pull one over the rest of the government officials as well as The Filipino People.

All I know is that if I was supposed to take a new drug, I’d want to know what that drug could actually do and If the doctor was trustorthy enough prescribe this medicine to me.

One Response to “The Charter Change Drug”

pero for the sake of peace, umatras na rin sila.

isang matinding balancing act na naman ang ginawa ng gobyerno:
lumamig ang gulo dahil sa mere skepticism at HINDI ituloy ang chacha
    or
ituloy ang chacha at umunlad ang pilipinas

pinili ng karamihan na hindi, kaya magdudusa tayong lahat.
