Spinning Wars
The key spin coming from Malacañang is that the worst is over. The spin coming from opposition Senators is that the worst is yet to come. Most Anti-Gloria groups echo the calls of many opposition Senators. But the battleground keeps shifting, and without a true focus, and a real commitment by all sectors including the church, could President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s spin on the events be the real conclusion to all this mess?
Well, first of all, I’m not so sure that we should believe the spin coming from Malacañang, especially when they are the focus the resignation call. Biased opinion is an understatement when it’s a statement coming from The Office of The President itself. This includes statements from the puppets as well, including National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzalez who, earlier in the week, said that the worst for Gloria is over.
The reason that I’m skeptical in the belief that the worst is over is that the NBN investigation is still not over. Most Filipinos still believe that Gloria had a hand in the shady deal to begin with. Neri has not testified as of yet, and the Supreme Court is yet to decide on his case.
Another important reason is the still fresh corruption scandal regarding the Spratly for Money scandal. Senate President Manny Villar has asked Malacañang to allow public access to the following documents:
1. Agreement for Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking in Certain Areas in South China Sea between RP and China, signed on Sept. 1, 2004 in Beijing
2. Tripartite Agreement for Joint Marine Scientific Research in Certain Areas in South China Sea among RP, China and Vietnam signed on March 14, 2005
3. Declaration on Conduct of Parties in South China Sea agreed upon by the countries of ASEAN standing as a bloc in dealing with China
4. The maps attached to the agreement, detailing the Spratlys and the South China Sea
5. The map, allegedly presented by the Department of Energy officials last Friday (March 7) to select Cabinet officials which is accordingly a revision of the one annexed to the pact with China
6. The opinion of the Department of Justice (DOJ) on the matter
7. Similar opinions and studies rendered by the DOJ on seismic undertaking between countries, including a DOJ opinion in 1990 by then Secretary Franklin Drilon covering RP and Australia
8. A list of all government officials and agencies involved in the negotiation, drafting and formulation of the existing agreement
9. Report of Phase I of the implementation of the JMSU, here are the things that could still be explosive to the Arroyo Administration, if any or all are released to the public, the Senate, or both.
And because we have yet to uncover the details in this fishy deal, why would we believe the spin coming from President Arroyo?
Now, it seems that The Spratly deal is painting an even more grim picture as to how the prostitution of our land has been implemented in order to garner funds for The Arroyo Regime. And indeed, it seems that the entirety of all these back room deals with China should now be scrutinized. The Spratly Islands deal may have been the start, but it seems that because the Spratly deal went so well under-the-radar, President Gloria Arroyo’s Adminsitration has had the gall to try to implement even more “Executive Agreements” with China after that initial agreement.
And so, this is the argument I am putting forward as to why Arroyo is yet to see the worst. And I for one do not wish for things to wane off which would let Gloria Arroyo off the hook once again. I must insist on an end to the nightmare phone call that our nation has been witness to for far too long. And because we have already heard “Hello, Garci” — I insist on Goodbye Gloria.
