Response to Alex Magno’s Article “Meaningless”

I couldn’t resist writing a little response to the very partisan and inadequate March 8 Philippine Star article of Alex Magno.

He tries to point out the inadequacies of the current opposition while steering clear of any formidable issues that hinder the success of The Administration candidates in the surveys (Good Economy due to OFW, extrajudicial killings, military intimidation, etc.)

It is writers such as Mr. Magno himself who bear part of the fault for why Filipinos may be indifferent during this election season.

Although, he may point out that funds are lacking in the opposition, he does no service to the reader as to why this may be happening. It is clear in politics that the brunt of the campaign funds come from the private sector as well as the business sector, Mr. Magno clearly avoids the reason why the machinery of Gloria enjoys the incumbent power that it possesses, and why the Opposition is hindered from receiving campaign funds from the business sector. He would do much service to the reader if he pointed out that businessmen are reluctant to provide campaign funds for fear of reprisals from the current Administration.

He is trying to spearhead and back the notion of the importance of the 2010 election, oblivious to the fact that if this administration wins in the upcoming May election, there may not even be a 2010 election.

As all politicians know, and what Mr. Magno ought to contemplate, that it is foolish to look further than the current election itself, because the next election will for some part, be dictated by the present election… This is the advice of Bill Clinton himself when asked about future elections to which he would always reply with: let’s concentrate on the current campaign, and let’s not be foolish as to be so farsighted that we lose focus on the current election..

This is what the administration is trying to do, however, it will not work for more observant Filipinos, who actually think, and don’t need the writers such as Mr. Magno telling them what to think and what not to think (instead of just offering their opinion). Last I heard, each and every human being had their own brain to use.

In conclusion, despite what anyone says, each and every election is important. If it wasn’t so, then writers such as Mr. Magno himself, wouldn’t be writing about it at all.

  1. Nick,

When is this Blog Awards? I am not sure if I can attend on your behalf. Arbet of AW Holdings has also been nominated. He will be joining the eyeball. If I cannot make it, with your permission of course, may I ask him to represent you too?

  2. Btw, congrats and thanks for giving me the privilege to represent you.

  3. @Schumey, the Awards Night is on 31 March 2007, 5pm at Podium 4, RCBC Plaza Auditorium in Makati City.

Ah, yes. Arbet is a finalist for the news and media category. Both you and Arbet would be a great representative…

thank you as well for accepting, and getting back with me so soon.

  4. Nick, are you trying to pick a fight with Alex Magno??? I didn’t agree with some of his points either. But, he’s still a pretty cool writer in my opinion.

  5. @HindiAkoPinoy,

I must admit, I may have come off a bit personal on this one. And I’ll be the first one to say that I admire the writing of Alex Magno.

But, I had to disagree with his constant assertion that the upcoming election is meaningless.

If this were the truth, then you wouldn’t see, a militarization of the elections, intimidation of party lists, disqualifications of legitimate candidates, election spending left and right, and so on and so forth…

Despite the spin that The Administration may try to implement, every election is important, including this one.

  6. I have never been a fan of Alex Magno (I wish I could’ve hit him with a rotten egg last September :p) but I do respect and agree with his views and opinions on some matters. He still raised valid points, however, he did not present the two sides of the coin clearly and comprehensively. :D

And, you can admire a writer without having to agree with everything s/he writes. ;)
