Philippine Election Day 2007
It’s election day here in The Philippines, last minute jockeying, vote-buying, vote-rigging, and maybe even some mass attempts of cheating are probably now in full gear. It’s the time in The Philippines, when it seems money does grow on trees, and cheating may just be the national sport for the day.
But, if you are voting, I hope that your conscience will guide you in your choice. If you are a flying voter, then I hope you fly far away from The Philippines. It is decision day and whether the administration likes it or not, I hope voters will see this election as a referendum on one key figure, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
It seems like it has been a long road up to this day, with the initial movements of candidates at the start of the election season, the intimidation felt by some candidates, the spending, the television ads, the “campaigning soldiers”, and the nonstop bombardment of election ads.
It seems that the nation is due for a rest, and hopefully a change and a shift of power. Hopefully a check and balance of government will once again be seen, and hopefully our nation can move forward from yet another divisive election season.
Which candidates will win? Nothing is certain at this point, but what I can only hope, no matter who the winning candidates are, is that any attempt at mass fraud will be thwarted. One can only hope, despite seeing it time and time again during The Philippine elections.
Early this morning, there was a report at GMA that last minute vote buyers were arrested in Cavite. You can watch the video below, and you can bet your money on it that this is what is happening around the nation. So stay vigilant, and take a close look at what power can do to those who want it the most…
