Morning After The Philippine Elections

Election day in The Philippines is over, and the counting has begun. It seems that violence during the elections was down, but that’s not to say there wasn’t the fair share of election violence. However, instead of violence, cheating may have just increased instead. Reports of anomalies have also flooded the poll watchdogs, which despite that, I still hope that these incidents will be reported, either to the ComElec, news media, or both.

TrillanesThe surprise Cinderella candidate seems to be Trillanes, with limited funds, limited access to campaign, he has seemed to defy the odds and garner excellent support from the voting public.

And another surprise in the initial results is Ralph Recto, he’s not even in the top 12. It’s unofficial of course, but it is still surprising to see him so low. He’s currently near the 12th spot, so I think he may still have a chance to move up. The results seem to be quite sporadic and even Escudero is yet another shocker by taking the top spot so far.

If you remember the last SWS survey, you will see why some of the initial results seem quite surprising, considering that Loren had such a wide margin from the rest of the field.

Some thoughts

So far, it looks as if the Gloria machinery has not worked out for the Senate Candidates, but in the end, the House will probably remain intact for Gloria, thus protecting her from any impeachment concerns that may arise if the opposition take hold of the House of Representative.

Could it be that the machinery was more focused on local elections than that of the National Senate Elections? Could it be that cheating on a national level would have been too obvious, thus putting more focus on local elections? All these questions may be answered in the upcoming days.
