God Damn America

And so was the phrase that launched a million youtube views. God Damn America. The video of Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s former pastor at Trinity Church, as he went through a sermon. Can Barack Obama pass this scandal with his approval rating still high? Will this hurdle be the start of a decline in his popularity? And why does this issue matter so much?

It’s astounding that almost 150 years after the signing of the emancipation proclamation which basically was the abolition of slavery, and almost 50 years after the civil rights movement began, that it is race once again that is a defining issue that threatens, if not already, to drive a wedge in the democratic party, and America as a whole.

It is the remarks of reverend Wright that may have put this baby on overdrive, but it was certainly the attempt of former President Bill Clinton early in the game that had this primary headed towards the race card.

But is God Damning America, for having still within it a semblance of racism, the frightened electorate who will never vote for a black man. Not because he has a pastor going on a media blitz trying to clear his own name, but because maybe America is not ready for a black president. Mayor, yes. Governor, of course. Even Senator. But a black man as The President?

Maybe God Damn America, but only a portion of it. For within the country lies the seeds of hatred, bigotry, and racism that will not die.

I am saddened that this event is playing out. Just recently Reverend Wright went in front of the National Press Club…

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

That last part I will post here, since i think it was the question and answer portion that really got Jeremiah Wright all riled up.

This is the test that has Barack Obama trying his hardest to distance himself from. The test of his “former” pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

But Barack Obama is failing miserably, even if by poll numbers, this controversy hasn’t had an affect on his campaign. Although I sincerely doubt the credibility of these results, I think the way that Barack Obama has consistently tried to calm the public and say that the views of Rev. Wright does not represent his own, it is the way he says it verbatim each and every time that has be cynical of this politician. Yes folks, Barack Obama is a politician.

But because Jeremiah Wright came out in front of the National Press Club in such a manner and tone, instead of just shutting up, Barack Obama was forced to make the following statement,

Clearly, a deviation from previous statements from Barack Obama. What now? If Barack Obama gets the nomination, he still has an uphill battle ahead, and his image will no longer be that which we knew just months ago. Seeds of doubt my friends, seeds of doubt. He doesn’t want this to be an issue, but it will. The Republicans will no doubt use every method known to man, including a try at swiftboating Barack Obama.
