Election Update: Opposition Woes Or Just Spin?

In the past few weeks, there have been some reports of the waning of the opposition, even amidst the high rankings in surveys. Is it just political spin or is there some truth to this matter?

Perhaps the following report by the Inquirer, can shed some light as to why the opposition has hit some bumps along the road towards the May elections. Recent opposition stumbles may also be due to financial reasons as seen by the cancellation of some of its rallies.

Also on the agenda of some opposition woes, it seems there have been reports that the opposition may have abandoned Estrada as campaign issue, by having Osmeña take over for the campaign.

I really don’t agree with the implications that comes with Osmeña taking over the management of the campaign, I think it’s more of having a seasoned political mind at the helm of the campaign that has really driven the decision.

In order for the Opposition to truly go for the clean sweep, or maybe get close, it has to utilize more than a single issue, because let’s face it, the Administration has more than enough negatives to go after. Two of the more prominent issues are actually the faces of Actors/Politicians. Let’s call it the Poe/Estrada Factor. Which, in my opinion, is really a bad way to campaign, since it doesn’t even evoke any sort of platform, but it gets the sentimental votes out in full force.

I think Estrada is a bit over blowing the situation when he blames the Administration for the opposition woes. No doubt, the Administration has had a hand in this, throwing a lot of spin on the subject, but let’s not forget that this opposition hardly is united in all the issues.

Let’s take for example the case with Kiko, which has many opposition candidates at odds with each other on whether or not to support Kiko Pangilinan. Some would like to keep the 12th spot open, others like Noynoy will leave at the hint of even replacing Kiko.

In any case, despite the woes, the Opposition still lead in the surveys.

  2. Nick,

Good to know that everything is ironed out. I am still sick, now I regret having those oysters the other day. My doc said it the culprit. But I’m ok and getting better.

The GO seems to be at a crossroads now. Its halfway in the campaign and they can still get their bearings back. Taking out Erap of the equation will make them more credible. I was informed that they have had the funding problem from the onset. You will however be surprised at the outpouring of support even from the ordinary folks. Their contributions may be small but definitely welcome.

Erap should stop giving the administration too much credit. It shows the chinks in the GOs armor.
