Philippine Political Links: June 6 2007

It seems that there has been a spike in the news as of late, so to get everyone on track, let’s survey the online landscape for some worthwhile news. Sit back with your coffee, and read all about it.

Manuel reminds us all of the anniversary of the ‘Hello Garci’ tape leaks, and the buzz that ensued, as media latched on to the biggest story of the year, and the PCIJ story that followed. And Manuel also observes, as I have been observing along with many of our fellow Filipino Bloggers as well as media, that The Administration will continue with its move to change the charter.

Ellen talked to Gabby Claudio, presidential adviser on political affairs for Gloria Arroyo, and asked why they are so adamant on pushing with the fraudulent Maguindanao Votes. And whether or not Migz Zubiri will be OK with the name Senator Daya if he manages to win a seat in the senate.

Juan Mercado catches up to the sentiments of Barangay Lahug citizens, as he calls out Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña for scrapping a scheduled construction of a 20 classroom building all because of politics. As you know, I’ve been writing nonstop about this issue, and I will continue to do so until this scumbag of a Mayor finally does his job and stops playing politics.

I personally enjoyed reading Manuel’s wrap up and a bit of historical lesson in his PCIJ peace titled, An Abnormal Return to Normality. From what I gathered, the 8-2-2 shocker result is an overwhelming referendum against the Gloria Administration. The local elections have always gone in favor of the incumbent, and that the “political cannibalism” that took place against KAMPI and LAKAS in the local elections may have hurt the Administration even more. Despite the roadblocks fielded against them, both Cayetano and Trillanes, managed to get into the Senate, which was a double slap to Arroyo. And lastly, a big congratulations to the watchdogs and other citizen groups for their willingness to guard the votes.

And Schumey writes a moving piece, Apathy breeds Impunity, and closes with, Apathy breeds impunity. Lest you want to lose your liberty again, I’d start caring “again” before its too late. Just imagine of what we can do if we wake up all at the same time from our apathetic slumber.

And Garcia makes a bold statement, Any impeachment attempt will likely come from the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party members to force President Arroyo to support Pangasinan Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr.’s bid for an unprecedented fifth term as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
