Hitting Close To Home

My father’s side of the family is from Western Samar, and the recent news of the Assassination of the mayor of the island town of Daram came as a shock to my system. I’ve heard of the mayor, but never met him in person. I don’t want to speculate on anything, but it makes me wonder if this is politically related. Considering that it’s election season, anything is possible and nothing can be ruled out.

MANILA, Philippines — Mayor Benito Astorga of the island town of Daram in Western Samar province was shot by unidentified gunmen early Thursday morning and died before reaching a hospital in Tacloban City.

Astorga was gunned down around 1:30 a.m. while attending a public dance in Barangay Birawan in Daram.

Sketchy police report said he was shot five times before the assailants fled.
