Killing Rampage In Calbayog Samar
Calbayog, I’ve been there many times. It’s a lovely city to go around in, but the latest news coming out of the city is that of shock, horror, and death.
According to the Inquirer,
A 39-year-old jobless man, believed to be mentally imbalanced, went into a rampage in an interior village in Calbayog City in Samar, early Saturday, hacking to death 10 people, including seven children, and seriously wounding 16 others.
Chief Insp. Aniceto Tecbobolan, city police chief, identified the suspect as Danny Guades of Barangay Gadgaran. He is detained at the city police jail.
The running account from Inquirer, is almost too shocking to believe. And I’m not so sure that the Inquirer should be emphasizing that he’s a jobless man. This is the action of a very sick individual. On the contrary, I think this may point to my assertion of a lack in health care. And a lack of mental help for those suffering with mental illness is something that we should also worry about.
It doesn’t matter whether or not, he has a job, an individual will go through stints of bad times in his life, it doesn’t mean that a murderous rampage is the result. There needs to be a closer look at this person’s profile, and whether or not his past actions should have resulted in further investigations of his mental health. Because, no amount of stress will do this to a normal and sane person.
Perhaps even the response of local police could even be looked at. But then again, there are things that are even beyond analysis.
But let’s not jump into conclusion, and just step back a little. There are a lot of things that are still unknown at this point.
I called my mama and papa about the situation, and they couldn’t believe it either. It’s something you don’t want to dwell on, but it’s just a sad event, that makes you wonder… not about any specific thing, but it just makes you think..
This story will be buried in the national news within a day or two, but to those families who are directly affected, and maybe even the entire city of Calbayog, this is something that they will have to endure together.
