Papa and Dad
It’s Father’s Day today, and I’m away from my dearest Papa, the man who raised me to be the individual I am today. I have two father’s. One father, my biological, I call Dad, he passed away a couple of years ago, our story together is a long one, and I will share in the future. And then there’s Papa, the man who raised me in The Philippines. My story is a long story, full of twists and turns, of love, of loneliness, of sacrifice, something that many OFW families experience.
This post is not about my story, it is about my dearest Papa, a father figure, who taught me the value of hard work. The man who inspired me to become an engineer myself. It is he, who also let me peek into the bureaucracy of The Philippine government, because for many years, he was passed up for promotion, because he did not play politics. Sadly to say, with many government agencies, to move up, is to have political connections.
He is a father who taught me through example, not by the word of mouth. He is not an outspoken man, but he is respected by many, because of the work ethic he has had since childhood. I am certain he also got this from his father.
In any case, I love both of my fathers, because each has taught me something about life. About loving someone, and telling that person before it’s too late. About forgiveness, about sacrifice, and about love.
I am a better man today, because of these two individuals. I carry with me the lessons of these men, and I am forever grateful for such a childhood. I know, I’m very vague here, about this long story, and trust me, it’s a long one. I am not a blogger to write about such personal things, but today, I thought, I would share a little snippet of myself, and hopefully, give something to our readers, a lesson, that no matter what, we only have one father in our lifetime.
I’m just lucky to have had two.
