300 Letters and Prayers end up in The Ocean.
We write letters all the time. To our girlfriend, our boyfriend, husband, wife, or to any of our family members.
Each written word is sacred, because most of the time it is a piece of our very soul that we put into each one of those syllables.
We may write just to say Hi, just to inquire on someones situation, we tell someone we miss them and that letter is treasured for decades on end..
In fact, I still have a few love letters in a shoebox, just so I can open them up when I feel lonely and maybe unloved… At least I know, that in some time.. in one point of time.. someone cared enough to write to me and express their love…
You can imagine my sadness when I read a story today regarding a whole bag of unread, mostly unopened letters and prayers found in the ocean. They were addressed to a New Jersey Minister, a Reverand Grady Cooper. The Reverand died 2 years ago, and some of the letters were even dated as far back as 1973. The letters were found by an insurance adjuster last month while fishing with his son…
300 lives. 300 prayers.
One unwed mother wrote that her baby was due in four weeks, and asked God to make the father fall in love with her and marry her so the child would have a father. Another, about asking forgiveness for an abortion.
In the Philippines, we all know someone that is either abroad or in another region of the country and often times, letters are exchanged. It is communication that we yearn for when we are so far away from the ones we love.
I can’t imagine, one letter that didn’t mean so much to me. I live here in the U.S. and each letter that I receive is always treasured. What more, if the letter was a prayer of hope, of tragedy, a prayer…
Just goes to show you, whether or not you write and/or receive letters, or both. You should treasure each and everyone of them… they are a treasure for the soul.
In this media laden world of telephones, cellphones, and Instant Messaging, I still feel that the wonder of opening that envelope, unfolding the paper and reading the handwritten words of someone you know is one of the most magical thing that no digital machine can ever accomplish.
I think, this is the reason we filipinos text message a whole bunch. Aside from being cheaper than calling, it is in words that sometimes you can say more from your heart. And I don’t know about you, but the most sweet and treasured text messages stay saved in my inbox almost indefinitely.
