Censorship For Blogging? All Because of Brian Gorrell?

Sometimes you have to let the bad in with the good, this is my thoughts regarding The Brian Gorrell controversial blog. In fact, I think he made the blog rounds during the launching of his blog, and I just ignored it. Honestly, I haven’t been following his blog, and I went to it only once to do some research as to the authenticity of his claims.

But when I say, to let the bad in with the good, I mean that the coverage that Brian Gorrell is garnering is nothing short of amazing, and because of this publicity, the blogging world in The Philippines is getting some much needed publicity itself. But the publicity isn’t all that good. So, is any type of scandal, good publicity? I’m not so sure.

As I said in a previous article, blogging is important because it can provide a different set of analysis, something that can always be missed by mainstream media.

As bloggers, we really don’t have the choice which stories get out into mainstream media, and which stories will ultimately catch on fire. This has been the case with The Malu Fernandez controversy, and this also seems to be the case with Brian Gorrell.

But one thing seems to be a constant, and that constant definitely involves some sort of attack. Bloggers went on the offensive with regards to Malu Fernandez, and now Brian Gorrell goes on the offensive with regards to DJ Montano. It’s a shame that the only way to gain headlines is through a controversy, but then again, are we really surprised when celebrities themselves have to make up such scandals and controversy in order to bring some publicity to their movies?

Maybe it’s the same tactic with blogs these days?

And here’s a video from QTV, asking if blogs should be censored? What do you think?

  1. Blogging should not be censored. The Internet laws that Atty. Lacierda sees the need for may be needed to combat online scammers and criminals, but never to censor online content.

As Argee said, the Internet is one of the last bastions of democracy — despite the digital divide, if I may add.

What is needed, as the story pointed out, is for both bloggers and readers to be responsible netizens.

  2. I believe censorship is not the answer. The lawyer who was interviewed, Attorney Edwin Lacierda, is correct: With freedom comes responsibility. But I fear some internet users just can’t handle such responsibility. I think for now self-regulation is necessary.

  3. [...] amount of money from him) and his buddies, collectively called the "Gucci Gang". Well, Tingog.com, an opinion blog,  has an article headlined "Censorship for Blogging? All Because of [...]

  4. I agree with ederic, blogging should not be censored. and it cant be censored.

  5. Blogging has become a fresh bud for the democracy. Blogs have ‘internal mechanisms’ which can already test the ’self-regulating’ practices of the blogger. No laws are needed to cage the blogosphere under the helm of constraints. Besides, it is pointless, as bloggers can always hide under the cloaks of anonymity. Although much credit, I think, can be given who wrestle with the carnage of the times without masks on their faces or pseudonyms to sport.

  6. No to censorship. Besides, good luck to anyone who’ll even try considering the complexities — and that’s putting it mildly — of imposing censors on the Internet. It’s just not possible… unless the government does a blanket censorship, like China and some Arab countries. Not gonna happen here.

    Censorship of blogging means?

Censorship simply define as- restriction, editing, control, suppression, cutting and expurgation.

Do they really understand what censorship means? This issue has two factors affecting the freedom of expression. If you will censor it for adult materials adult information for the security of the kids then, I could say it’s okay. But if the online blogging would be censored for your freedom of expression, then I could say why? My questions are as follows…

    1. Why are they going to restrict every ones freedom to express their feeling?
    2. Editing some body’s blog? Then what are they going to leave in the story (edited by?)
    3. Control? Controlling everyone to express their freedom, what is the information super highway? Is it own by a communist government? Do they could count the wave, the signal, the letters and the word we type to express what the world or what myself must be?

I hope they must think about it first before finalizing the issue. If somebody hurt from the blog then there is a law in every country to protect someone’s dignity, honor and reputation. I think nothing to worry of unless bloggers will avoid explicit materials online
