The Wrong SONA Outfit
Looking at the headlines in The Inquirer the other day, I couldn’t help but notice the picture of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, “GEARED FOR BATTLE”. Sporting a camouflage vest, she met with military commanders in Zamboanga City over pursuit operations against those who attacked the Marines in Tipo Tipo, Basilan.
I was thinking to myself, maybe she should have worn this outfit during her State of the Nation Address (SONA 2007), considering that the most quoted part of that SONA was, “a President is always as strong as she wants to be”.

This reminds of another bellicose leader garbed for all-out-war. In reality, when bullets start whining overhead, all this bravado dissipates fast and triggers a mad scramble to hide under the bed. It’s the foot soldier who spills his blood as a consequence of such bravado.
That famous sona quote of hers, “a President is always as strong as she wants to be” could only be true if she wanted to be strong, but is she?
A President who Flip-Flop more often than a showcase whales entertaining the public, who, I still believe is not her own Woman as she wants her people to believe. I believe that she is propped Strong only by the Military, through a very convenient arrangement with the Generals and the Bureaucracy that depend their stipends by making her appear Strong… strong by appearance, deep inside, she doesn’t have her people solid backing…and only if she wants to… not because she is…
