Are We Ready For July 18 Earthquake In The Philippines

Although I highly doubt the veracity of the “prediction” that an 8.1 magnitude earthquake will hit The Philippines on July 18, which is just hours from now. I also have entertained the question on whether or not we are actually ready for a magnitude 8.1 earthquake.

What exactly is our earthquake disaster preparedness plan in case a major earthquake, even in the magnitude of 7, would be? Suffice it to say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and I guess, we’ve already ate this pudding before. The fact is that our country, our government, is just not ready for most disasters that come our way. Considering that typhoons hit our nation like clockwork each and every year, and still our government always seems to do a sloppy job is just plain proof that we are ill-prepared for such an earthquake.

Even with my grief regarding the loss of my cousin Bebot, this has been on the back of my mind, not because I believe it, but because the implications towards questions it has produced — The question of our preparedness.

Sad to say, I just don’t believe our government is prepared.

But then again, no one would be prepared for such a magnitude of an earthquake, especially our nation, where the house, the infrastructures, the brick and mortar building, just don’t have the capacity to withstand such an awesome power of nature. But still, that shouldn’t stop us from preparing for such a disaster.

If the sinking of The MV Princess of The Stars is an indication, we should definitely have such plans, if indeed we do have them, be implemented with haste. The key factor is time and urgency. within hours of such a disaster, coordination is key. Communication is key. And The President herself should be at the helm.

I truly wonder if we’re ready?

I can’t believe you wasted 7 whole paragraphs asking if the Philippines is ready for 8.1 mag earthquake. Don’t ever change your name to Einstein :)

  2. @haywood, haah, I won’t…

But mind you, the article is rhetorical. I hope you got the point. That the question was posed to bring up the point that indeed The Philippines isn’t even ready for any kind of disaster relief effort. What more, when it’s a high magnitude earthquake..
