A Bleak Future, Accountability No More
It seemed like there was a tide of awakening and realization of the extent of the corruption in this Arroyo Administration and the potential to finally have her made accountable. This awakening and realization has also made us all aware indeed, the true extent. Even as The Spratly issue and the NBN scandal has come to a peak, so too have the realization of many Filipinos that our nation is already in the grips of Malacañang. The courts, congress, The Executive Branch, government departments, and even the Church itself — all under control.
Of course, Arroyo can’t last forever, she must step down sooner or later, either forced or not. Either constitutionally or not. And even on that day, we Filipinos cannot rejoice, because in all likelihood, the prospect of “The Pardon” is almost assured for her.
So, where does that leave all these investigations? When, in the end, our own government has let go of the need of accountability.
There is crime, but no punishment.
And even if Arroyo is toppled, what of De Castro? Will he be loyal to the people, or to the one who gave him his post? Noli De Castro is already at the top of the surveys, and even if it is two more years until the vote, at this point, he’s the front runner I dare not wish for.
And with regards to The Supreme Court’s decision, I have this lingering thought, and a thought I had wished those 9 consenting judges would have considered. And that is of the right of the people to know, the will of the Filipino people, and the good of The Filipino people. Because even if there are three coequal branches of this government, they must not forget that all three serve The Filipino People.
Did they not realize, that the three questions are important in uncovering the truth behind the NBN deal?
1) Whether President Arroyo approved the project in spite of the bribery disclosure; 2) Whether she had dictated on Neri to approve the project; and 3) Whether she had followed up on her directive.
If it is the constitution they are worried about, there is a simple litmus test. The constitution cannot be against The Filipino People, but it is meant to serve The Filipino People. And so we have to ask these nine judges, how in the FREAKING world does their decision help the people discern whether or not their government is making a mockery of their hard earned money?
Bleak future indeed.
Even Villar said, in a statement,
We are firm in the belief that public interest is superior. It should come first before anything, and anyone else according to the Constitution. The institution of the Senate will remain an ally in the defense of the people’s most cherished democratic rights
The Supreme Court needed to strike down Neri’s petition if only to prove their independence, and to realize that without it, they would leave The Senate powerless in their investigations. The Senate being the only institution left in our government that has any inkling of independence left. The Supreme Court also had to realize, that their decision would mean putting the breaks on even more investigations down the road, especially when even The Ombudsman care only for theatrics rather than actual investigations.
But all is done, The Senate can file a motion for reconsideration, but that will certainly be struck down by The Yes-Men of The Supreme Court.
I had wished for something positive to write today. But maybe someone else can do that. Not me, not today.
