Former Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan has been Captured
Former General, former Senator, and long time coup plotter, Gringo Honasan has been captured. There’s a lot of conflicting reports on exactly how he was arrested. It was in a subdivision in Makati after “brief chase”. The Agence France-Presse reported that Honasan may have even jumped out of a moving car. Other reports say he injured his ankle and foot due to a jump from the second floor of a townhouse.
No matter what happened, he was promptly detained at the CIDG headquarters in Camp Crame and then transferred to a PNP General Hospital to treat his wounds.
Unfortunately, being a former general and senator, he may escape again (they may have Honasan sent to Fort Sto. Domingo, Laguna). He has escaped before even from heavy security.
But just how many coup attempts has Honasan made? I really don’t feel like doing the research and actually counting. Eventhough, you may hate the government and think that it’s totally the wrong administration to be governing and there’s all this clamor for a change in presidency, It seems like Gringo Honasan tries to pull off a coup every other month just for the sake of it.
We can’t be a democracy and put up with these type of actions. If we want to unseat or dethrone the existing administration it must be by the will of the people and through legal means and impeachment alone. More actions that point to coup attempts and plots will only further destabalize this country and send our economy down the toilet.
Look, I know that some people in power want to wrestle for the seat there in MalacaƱang. I know that there are activist groups in every corner of The Philippines that want Arroyo to step down. The fact is that it’s not going to happen. Face it.
I don’t understand why there are so many supporters of Honasan. Are memories so short as to not remember the many bloody coup attempts made by him and his men during the Aquino Administration. True he helped unseat the former dictatorship of Marcos. But, so many coup attempts just shows that his loyality in The Philippines is very much lacking.
Since the failed coup d’etat attempt last February Honasan has been on the run. Although, apparently he was still trying to set up a political campaign (talk about multi tasking). Other coup plotters have been arrested since then, but Honasan has proved to be very elusive and the government even succumbed and set a monetary award for his arrest at P5.0 million. But two other alleged coup plotters remain at large (Jake Malajacan and Felix Turingan).
Seems to me that Honasan has a deep addiction for suburban warfare of some sort. Yet with charisma and of course being granted political amnesty he was able to win a seat in the Senate.
But, all these Coup attempts are just so wrong. As in Iraq, problems in The Philippines will never be won with violence or at the will of a gun. The problems we face are political in nature and to a growing number of individuals maybe even our form of government.
Here’s a GMA special that was aired regarding The EDSA Revolution: (Honasan is featured as well)

I didn’t like Gringo for many while now. He thinks he’s so gwapo and the masses will believe his lies. He s not very trust worthy.
Thanks for the comment “masamasigringo”. I really don’t see why your argument is based on how seemingly good looking Honasan is. The more important issue is… Why is PR (Public Relations) enough to bring a coup d’etat proponent such as Honasan to be able to run for a seat as important as The Senate.
In 2000 he was granted Amnesty, which I really thought was a wrong idea. Amnesty for a man that literally bombed our own capital and held the major airports and strategic areas sieged. Brutal coup attempts, that the only recourse by then President Aquino was to ask the United States for help.
