Cockfighting - Tigbakay - Sabong
Carcar, Cebu, Philippines - The sport of Cockfighting is deeply embedded in the blood of many Filipinos. In Cebu, they call it Tigbakay. And in Tagalog, the term is referred to as Sabong. I have cousins who participate in the sport, and take it to another level in terms of their dedication. The picture on the right is taken just as a man is about to get his Rooster ready for the fight. It’s serious, because often times, hundreds, even thousands, of pesos are on the line.
Cockfighting is legal in The Philippines and is also a form of gambling. I, myself, don’t care much for it, but I’m probably a minority. It’s often a tradition to hold cockfights during fiestas and town celebrations. Although, there are many well established arenas that have made this an almost weekly, even daily, event.
The one thing that I don’t care for is that in Philippine Cockfighting they use blades as long as 3 inches that attach to the legs of the rooster. And is so sharp, that I’ve seen the heads of chickens literally cut off from their bodies.
The loser, at least, has something to eat for dinner.
