Cockfighting – Tigbakay – Sabong

CockfightingCarcar, Cebu, Philippines – The sport of Cockfighting is deeply embedded in the blood of many Filipinos. In Cebu, they call it Tigbakay. And in Tagalog, the term is referred to as Sabong. I have cousins who participate in the sport, and take it to another level in terms of their dedication. The picture on the right is taken just as a man is about to get his Rooster ready for the fight. It’s serious, because often times, hundreds, even thousands, of pesos are on the line.

Cockfighting is legal in The Philippines and is also a form of gambling. I, myself, don’t care much for it, but I’m probably a minority. It’s often a tradition to hold cockfights during fiestas and town celebrations. Although, there are many well established arenas that have made this an almost weekly, even daily, event.

The one thing that I don’t care for is that in Philippine Cockfighting they use blades as long as 3 inches that attach to the legs of the rooster. And is so sharp, that I’ve seen the heads of chickens literally cut off from their bodies.

The loser, at least, has something to eat for dinner.

  1. Actaully sabong si embeeded in the blood of many filipinos. Some are addicted to gambling but for me it is a kind of sports and enjoyment. Anyhow its only a matter of how you kill your chicken for dinner. Why this animal right group attack this kind of how you eat your chicken Play and Dine. But close there mouth to the mass execution of broiler chickens that use electricution, drowning or head cutting for human consumption. They are they same chicken. The one who understand about cock figthings are only the true filipinos.
